“He seems like a nice guy”—words that fuel my drive to advocate for others and increase understanding. This phrase reflects a bias that prioritises appearances over the victim's account, often leading to victim blaming. Such responses invalidate victims and discourage them from seeking help, increasing their isolation. Abusers often present a charming public persona, making it hard for others to believe the victim. This gap between public image and private behavior highlights the need for law enforcement training on abuse dynamics. By taking all reports seriously and creating a supportive environment, authorities can help ensure victims feel believed and supported. When someone discloses abuse to the police, officers should respond with empathy, support, and validation. They must listen attentively and most importantly, avoid judgment. Creating a safe, non-threatening environment which encourages victims to share their experiences without fear, helping progress in investigations and building trust in the justice system. #EndVictimBlaming #BreakTheSilence #AdvocateForChange #StopAbuse #SurvivorSupport #EndAbuse #StopTheCycle #TraumaInformed #SurvivorVoices #SafeReporting

Mariam's story is one of many victim-survivors of 'honour'-based abuse. ‘Honour’-based abuse (HBA) is motivated by the belief that someone has brought shame or dishonour to a family or community. Find out more about HBA on our website (link in comments) Today, we want to bring attention to this real life case study and the importance of reframing the language we use around victim-survivors who are not able to support police prosecution. The role of professionals in empowering victim-survivors is essential to good practice, and understanding the difficulties that many face reporting or supporting police prosecution is a key part of that. #16daysofactivism #domesticabuse #reducingtherisk #honourbasedabuse #support #goodpractice #empowering

⏰TIME TO REGISTER -> Nov 14 Webinar “Why do my DV clients always want to dismiss their protection orders?” “If this abuser keeps saying they need their stuff from the victim’s apartment, why do they have so many excuses for not picking it up at the agreed times?” “Why would anyone stay with an abusive partner?” If you work with victims of Intimate Partner Violence, you have probably heard questions like those and maybe even asked them yourself. IPV is a pattern of behaviors, not a singular event, and a failure to understand the intricacies of that pattern can lead to inappropriate responses by law enforcement, the courts, victim advocates, and other supportive outsiders. This “intensive introduction” is ideal for novice and veteran justice system personnel alike. Join us on Nov 14 when David Ramón Zayas returns to discuss: ✔️Better recognize and name abusive tactics for what they are and how they work. ✔️Approach current victims of domestic violence with a deeper understanding and provide more effective support. ✔️Access additional resources for more in-depth information on DV. We are deeply concerned by the recent news regarding a deputy sheriff's arrest for domestic violence. Law enforcement plays a crucial role in addressing domestic violence, yet cultural challenges within the system can impact survivors' trust. Some officers perpetrating domestic violence at higher rates than the general population create contradictions that undermine this trust, making it harder for survivors to report abuse or feel protected. Transparency and accountability are essential to building a system that protects everyone, especially those affected by domestic violence. https://lnkd.in/gtT2ma9y

In my law enforcement career, I’ve seen clear patterns in the types of crimes that affect women. Many crimes — like stalking, intimate partner violence, and sexual assault — are often minimized or misunderstood by the public. But these patterns show us the reality: women are disproportionately targeted. Here are a few key things I’ve noticed: - Most attackers are known to the victim: Be cautious, even around people you trust. - The escalation is often slow: Small signs of control or jealousy can turn into something much more dangerous. - Public spaces aren’t always safe: Women are often harassed in broad daylight. Recognizing these patterns can help us stay vigilant. Crime prevention starts with awareness. How do you stay safe in your day-to-day life? #CrimePrevention #WomenSafety
