Porthole Cabins originated as part of ship's armament to accomodate cannons. Today they are largely ornamental or nostalgic. Portholes are generally circular and allows natural light to cabins placed on below deck space, usually closer to the waterline and typically towards the forward end of the ship. Due to its location, these cabins have slightly smaller floor space. They are also subject to more motion of the ship. Cruise Ships may offer such cabins as inside or ocean view cabins, offering a limited outdoor view. Because such cabins are not full oceanview cabins, they are often offered at significantly lower fares than cabins with broad windows. Bottomline - These are great for cruisers on a budget to enjoy natural light without a higher price tag. Also to assume your booked oceanview cabin would be a broad window might be wrong as you might be offered a cabin with porthole window or an obstructed view. It is designed like a spoon, stands at 355 ft and is unique in the sense that it has the flexibility to stand vertically from a routine ship’s position of being horizontal. The idea of conventional lightning protection is to attract the lightning and to discharge it on a controlled path to the water. But the difference between yachts and houses are the small distances on yachts. The result is that lightning strikes typically damage the electronics due to induced overvoltages on yachts.
