It was a pleasure to welcome Mohammad Yasin MP for Bedford & Kempston, to our Living Well Centre in Bedford last week! As hospices face growing challenges from rising living costs and reduced funding, we were grateful for the chance to share the important work we’re doing. We also took the chance to highlight the critical need for continued support to ensure our specialist care services remain available to patients and their loved ones.💙💜 #KeechHospiceCare

Quick backstory: The Lighthouse grew up in the heart of a community that seldom spoke about end-of-life care. Hospice care was a taboo. Did you know? Hospices can be as unique as the individuals they serve. The odds: Pursuing excellence in such a delicate field is tough. Just like opening a new restaurant in a small town, the odds are stacked. And only 10% achieve recognition in their communities. The goal: But we had our sights on breaking barriers. For years, we've been relentless about education, compassion, and individualized care. The obstacle: Success was an uphill battle. Misconceptions about hospice. Fear and discomfort in the conversation. Lack of awareness. By 2020, it was a real challenge. The breakthrough: Until one day, a story of our care touched a family so deeply they shared it far and wide. As the story goes, it ignited a spark. The rest is history. Between 2020 and 2023, we went on to: Build a diverse community. Host meaningful events. Launch our website. Maybe most importantly, we started a critical conversation. The lesson: We love our story because it's about perseverance. It reminds us of the power of education, compassion, and care, compounded over time. Because when we focus on the right things, the future is certain. We just need it to catch up. Join our community to normalize the conversation about end-of-life care. #AdvancedCarePlanning #HospiceCare #EndOfLife #normalizingtheconversation

Yesterday a landmark decision was made by Parliament on #AssistedDying. It is the beginning of a long process of debate, review, and hopefully meaningful consultation with all parties including hospices. We have decades of experience to bring to the table! What stood out for me listening to MPs on both sides of the debate was a universal recognition of the inadequate funding for palliative and end of life care particularly hospices. The principle funding of the care for people who are dying should not come from “cake and secondhand clothes sales”! So as already highlighted by those far more eloquent than me, including Toby Porter, Saiyada Fazal and many others, is that we must make sure that what follows is a discussion on all aspects of those choices, including sustainably funded end of life care delivered by amongst others hospices like Dorothy House Hospice Care. The stark reality is that hospices across the country, adult and children, are not currently receiving adequate or sustainable funding! So as the discussions go forward it is an imperative and an opportunity for the voice of hospices, as championed by Hospice UK, to continue to be heard. We are vital, valued and respected partners in the care of our society and meaningful choice, whatever that looks like in the future, requires well funded, compassionate and equitable end of life care including from hospices!

What price democracy in South Australia?
We are building a bigger health system. 52 new beds and the new Clinical Services Building at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital are nearing completion. Including an expanded Emergency Department which will be almost 50% larger than the current. These beds are the first of 280 additional beds coming online this year and next across the system. That’s effectively the equivalent of building a brand new QEH-sized hospital.

The UK General Election is only a few weeks away, CEOs and senior leaders from the Cheshire & Merseyside Hospice Provider Collaborative are calling for: • Recognition that hospice care and support services have a significant impact on local communities and that demand for services is increasing • A funding review that supports sustainable provision of end-of-life and palliative care services within hospices, across community-settings and in people’s own homes • NHSE to support the ICBs to work more supportively with hospices to continue to deliver high-quality palliative care, as outlined in the 2022 Health & Social Care Act • A commitment to maintaining centrally distributed NHSE funding for children’s hospices We hope to see meaningful support for adult and children’s hospices in party manifestos. #hospicecare #palliativecare #hospice
