Spinel. Spinels have for a few years now transitioned from "Semi-Precious stone" to "Precious stone" As we all know, the category of Precious stone counted Diamonds, Rubies, Sapphires and Emeralds. Now Spinel has been added to it. It's desirability is through the roof. Why is that? Well for centuries they have been confused with Rubies as they are mainly mined in close proximity to Corundum (Rubies and Sapphires) and their Red color ressembles Ruby Red. Their crystal is usually super transparent and they are less included than Rubies. In short they are desired for their Intense color and clean crystal. The vast majority of Spinels are not treated in any way due to these desirable characteristics. Spinels come in every color of the rainbow and endless combinations, making it an ideal contender for everyone's choice of color. Example of such is this Red Spinel originating from Tanzania, cut and polished in a Hexagon Shape and purposely left with a huge culet to show its natural intensity of color even in very flat stones. This one weighs 2.65ct and is super clean. Karatchoph Kazak rug from,Armenia, southwest Caucasus Age: circa 1860 Size: 6′.5″x5′.3″ (196×160 cm) The warm abrashed red ground displays the characteristic octagonal ivory medallion centered by a broad nicely abrashed green panel which is flanked by red nested squares.Dramatic hooks emanate from both the central panel and the inner edge of the octagon.There are triangular checkerboards squaring the medallion as well as four star filled ivory boxes and eight tertiary rectangular panels with nested green and yellow hooked motifs.Also in the field are human figures,animals,lazy S’s,stars,stylized flowers,and stylized botehs.The medium blue main border hosts slanted leaves alternating with colorful arrows.The flanking minor borders employ naturally corroded dark brown keyhole reciprocals.There are four red and yellow barber pole lines in the border system.At each end is a narrow dark red flatwoven finish.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good pile and condition except for minor edging problems. www.hagopmanoyan.com

A beautiful pair of Victorian rose bowls from the latter half of the 19th century. These have an eye catching mother of pearl lustre, superimposed with rose motifs, and are divided into eight sections. Like much pottery of this period, the bowls are unmarked, and so it is not posible to put a makers name to them. They are in excellent condition and measure 20.5cm in diameter by 5.5cm deep. Shirvan rug from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea Age: circa 1870 Size: 4′.11″x3′.5″ (150×104 cm) The double headed medallion presents a central square enclosing a red octagon with smaller ivory octagons above and below.In addition there are rosettes,small flowers,lazy S’s,diamonds and rosettes in the medallion.There are eight triangular motifs supporting the medallion.The complex border system shows a red main stripe with colorful barred S’s, black minor borders with colorful rosettes and two ivory tertiary borders with anchor like flowers.Edging and merging with the field is a mosaic pattern of small diamonds.There are five narrow barber pole lines in the border system.All the colors are from natural sources.The handle is soft and the condition is good. www.hagopmanoyan.com
