LET THIS BE A SIGN to give someone their flowers today, and throw them a nosegay as well! But wait, isn’t that just a bouquet? Nope. A nosegay is a bit different in that it is typically more compact and often uses more greens than flowers. Okay, but why is it called a nosegay? In the 15th century, they joined the word “nose” with “gay”, which, at the time, meant “ornament”. Thus, an ornament that was appealing to the olfactory senses. According to Wikipedia: “A nosegay, posy, or tussie-mussie is a small flower bouquet, typically given as a gift. They have existed in some form since at least Medieval times, when they were carried or worn around the head or bodice. Doilies are traditionally used to bind the stems in these arrangements. Alternatively, “posy holders”, available in a variety of shapes and materials (although often silver), enable the wearing of these arrangements “at the waist, in the hair, or secured with a brooch”. #wotd #wordoftheday
