Did you know? Diabetes affects 3% of Kenyans today and is projected to reach 4.5% by 2025 with nearly 800,000 people facing this daily health challenge. The key culprit? High sugar intake from ultra-processed foods. As we celebrate World Diabetes Day, we must address the role of diet in shaping Kenya’s health. KELIN's #KulaFitiKe campaign is paving the way for healthier choices through advocacy for front-of-pack warning labels and policies restricting the marketing of unhealthy foods to children. These steps are essential to empower consumers with the information needed to make better food choices and protect our youth from aggressive marketing of harmful products. The link between unhealthy diets and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes is undeniable. Yet, many people lack the awareness or clarity needed to make informed choices at the grocery store. Through #KulaFitiKe, we’re pushing for the policy changes Kenya needs to combat these rising health risks. Join us in this fight for a healthier Kenya! Share your meals with #KulaFitiKe and use #WekaLabelMbele to show your support for transparent labeling and #StopPredatoryMarketing to help protect our future generations. Let’s take a stand and demand healthier, informed food environments. Access to good nutrition plays a fundamental role in stimulating economic growth and development. A healthy population means a productive workforce and economic prosperity. Despite the Government’s efforts towards addressing malnutrition, child undernutrition is one of the major challenges facing our country. According to the Kenya Demographic Health Survey (KDHS) 2022, 18 percent of children 6–59 months are still stunted, 5 percent are wasted, 10 percent are underweight, and 3 percent are overweight, way above the World Health Assembly targets. The Cost of Hunger in Africa (COHA) Kenya Study (2019) estimated a loss of Kenya Shillings 373.9 billion equivalent to 6.9 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2014 due to child undernutrition. Childhood malnutrition results in reduced productivity, high costs of health-related treatment of malnutrition, and high education costs due to class repetition and absenteeism. Further, stunted workers are less productive in manual and non-manual activities compared to non-stunted workers, thus reducing their contribution to the national economy. There is therefore an urgent need for intentional partnerships and strategic investments in nutrition actions by all players including the national and county governments, development partners, private sector, civil society, communities and other non-state actors to curb the challenge of malnutrition. Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is implementing the Vegetables for All Project, among others, to increase vegetable consumption among 1.1 million Kenyans for improved nutrition. #HealthierDiets4All #Vegetables4All #Malnutrition #Stunting

Cooking demonstrations in Paoua Health District, Central African Republic, are aiming to promote healthy food practices and prevent malnutrition in communities affected by the protracted humanitarian crisis in the country. The demonstration last week with 116 people is part of the emergency nutrition programme supported by UK aid. Local group Moms Lumières assisted with the training. To build the capacity of local communities MENTOR is training volunteer Female Focal Points to help address malnutrition and disease. "Malnutrition has serious consequences for the health of children. It can lead to learning difficulties or even death in the worst case. Adequate nutrition, especially during pregnancy and early childhood, is the foundation for a child's healthy development. “The commitment of Female Focal Points is therefore essential to enable people to better control the determinants of health and thus improve their health. Their work is a shining example of the positive impact that community engagement can have in promoting the health and wellbeing of people at most risk of diseases.” - Dr SMITH MOYALBAYE ETIENNE from MENTOR in Central African Republic. On this #YouthDay, we have a unique opportunity to reflect on how we can better protect the health of our younger generation. One crucial step we must take is regulating trans fats in our food supply. Trans fats are known to increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and with rising cases of heart conditions in Kenya, this issue demands urgent attention. Regulating industrially produced trans fats will help prevent cardiovascular diseases and ensure that Kenya's youth grow up in a safer food environment. Ministry of Health, Kenya, we urge to take action now. Ensure that our youth are protected from preventable health issues. #TransFatFreeKenya #TransFatFreeEAC #WorldHeartDay

More than 540,000 deaths each year globally can be attributed to intake of industrially produced trans fats. Trans fat clogs arteries, increasing the risk of heart attacks and deaths. I would hate for you and/or your friend, spouse, child and loved one to be a statistic due to lack of knowledge! As a Broadcast Journalist, I seek to raise awareness and advocate for robust National regulations, to align with the World Health Organization recommended limit of 2 grams of industrially produced trans fats per 100 grams of total fat in all foods - Benedict Kirira / Broadcast Journalist Trans fats have no nutritional benefit and pose significant health risks, especially concerning cardiovascular diseases. That's why the World Health Organization introduced the REPLACE package to help countries eliminate these harmful fats. Kenya must follow suit to safeguard public health. #WorldHeartDay #TransFatFreeKenya #TransFatFreeEAC #HeartHealthChampion

Diabetes is a chronic disease, which occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. This leads to an increased concentration of glucose in the blood (hyperglycaemia). Diabetes and well-being is the theme for World Diabetes Day 2024-26. With appropriate access to diabetes care and support for their well-being, everyone with diabetes has the chance to live well. source: https://lnkd.in/gEpWES_d SDGs Ghana at Presidency UN SDG Action Campaign United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) World Food Programme Ministry Of Health, Ghana Ghana Health Service To mark this important occasion, our SDG book pick for today is "The Food Fraud Mystery". South Africa we have a problem. According to the most recent data 13% of our children under 5 are classified as obese- this rate is more than 2X the global average! The burden this places on our already crippling healthcare system is immense. Obesity is associated with various health risks, including an increased risk of developing conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and certain cancers. Addressing this issue requires a multi-prong approach including government policy and awareness campaigns, industry players who are committed to raising the bar and taking the empty calories and junk out of our food and parents setting the example with healthy eating and regular physical activity habits. At Rush Nutrition this is the bulwark of what we do in our efforts to reverse the tide of chronic diseases- by taking the poisons and toxins out of our foods which unfortunately have become synonymous with the industry in its efforts to drive bottom line. As an example of these efforts our range of Flik Flax bars have been endorsed by The GI Foundation as Often, and Very Often Foods. We are transforming health with every drop! This is the impact of clean water in Africa >> Access to clean water is a cornerstone of public health, especially in Africa, where the effects of waterborne diseases are devastatingly apparent. Here's how clean water is creating waves of positive change across the continent: ▶️Dramatic Decrease in Waterborne Diseases: Providing communities with clean water has led to a substantial decline in the incidence of diseases such as cholera and dysentery. The World Health Organization reports that improved water sources can slash the rates of these diseases by over 50%, significantly lowering child mortality rates. ▶️Nutrition and Clean Water: Clean water is integral to safe food preparation and consumption. With clean water, the risk of gastrointestinal infections drops, and nutritional uptake improves. This change is reflected in a 15% reduction in malnutrition and physical stunting among children, a critical step forward in regions plagued by chronic undernutrition (UNICEF). ▶️Safeguarding Maternal Health: Clean water has profound benefits for expectant mothers. Access to sanitized water sources minimizes the hazards of infections during pregnancy and childbirth. It also increases the chances of childbirth attended by healthcare professionals by 20%, contributing to a decrease in maternal mortality (UNICEF). Through these impacts, clean water saves lives and serves as a catalyst for health and development. I'm thrilled to share that I've recently received a certificate from UNICEF on the double burden of malnutrition. This course emphasized the coexistence of undernutrition and overnutrition within populations across the life-course. Key points include: - The double burden of malnutrition refers to undernutrition along with overweight, obesity, or diet-related NCDs within individuals, households, and populations. - Malnutrition can affect individuals at different life stages, such as being stunted as a child and overweight as an adult. - Dual-burden households, like stunted children with overweight mothers, are common in middle-income countries. - Complex causes: Biological, behavioral, environmental, and sociodemographic factors drive this issue. - Malnutrition contributes significantly to the global disease burden and has serious economic impacts. I'm excited to apply this knowledge to improve nutrition interventions and promote health. #Nutrition #HealthPromotion #UNICEF #Malnutrition UNICEF UNICEF Maroc World Health Organization
