„Best of Pinot Noir“ by the internationally renowned Falstaff goes to our #VignaGanger Pinot Noir Riserva 2020. We are more than excited that Falstaff has awarded our single vineyard wine with 97 points ranking it at the top of Italy’s Pinot Noirs. Years of thorough research have finally led us to the ideal site, the Ganger monopole. It is located in Mazon, at between 360 and 380 meters above sea-level, with a southwesterly exposure and has a unique microclimate and deep calcareous clayey soils. This is the home of our Pinot Noir Riserva Vigna Ganger, a wine as incomparable and unique as the site itself. Thanks to Falstaff Italia Othmar Kiem & Simon Staffler

Vintage 2019 The Yatir Forest 2019 is produced from Cabernet Sauvignon (52%), Petite Verdot (32%), Malbec (9%) Cabernet Franc (7%). The composition of varieties varies from year to year depending on the nature of the harvest, to emphasize the "Yatir” character, the specialness of the area, and its vineyards. Vineyards: Various plots in Yatir Forest that yielded the highest quality grapes in the given year. The wine aged for 15 months in French oak barrels of which one third were new remained in the winery for a further year to age in its bottle. #redwine #yatirforest #2019

As a half-Armenian germplasm nerd (who also enjoys wine), this is the LinkedIn content I didn’t know I needed. 🍇🍷 Like other clonally-propagated perennial crops (food and ornamental alike), wine grapes can display diversity even within the same cultivar, due to single mutations called “sports.” Besides offering diversity of flavor, color, or growth habit, sports are also a uniquely useful resource for understanding plant genetics: if you can identify the single point of mutation between two sport clones, you can pinpoint the genetic basis for a particular phenotype. Household names like Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, and Red Delicious have lots of known sports: some conferring different peel color, others conferring slightly different growth habit. When a particular variety is mass-propagated for long periods of time, the likelihood is that a chance mutation on one branch or cane will show up. Paradoxically, a massive monoculture can sometimes be the ideal place to find diversity! While doing fieldwork at a commercial apple orchard, I noticed one branch on a tree of the cider cultivar Brown Snout that had different-looking fruit on it. Instead of just having russeting on the calyx end, the fruit was fully russeted (like a potato 🥔). With the owner’s permission, I took cuttings and had it propagated into new trees. I dubbed it “DeFisher Brown Snout.” The fruit ripens at the same time, juice chemistry was identical—the only difference was the skin. #plantgenetics #mutations #biodiversity #diversity #wine #germplasm
Intravarietal diversity of ancient wine grape variety 'Areni'. Almost 31 clones have been recovered from the oldest home gardens and vineyards in Vayots Dzor Province, offering a glimpse into the rich history of wine-making and viticulture in this area. The intra-varietal diversity of the Areni grape variety is particularly noteworthy, making it a valuable subject of research and interest for winemakers and wine enthusiasts alike.

SOUTH AFRICA HAS ITS OWN UNIQUE WINE – PINOTAGE Did you know Pinotage is the only grape varietal unique to South Africa? 🍇 South Africa's fertile soil supports many grape varietals, including Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. However, Pinotage stands out as a unique South African creation. The Origin: Developed in 1925 by Abraham Perold, Stellenbosch’s first professor of viticulture, Pinotage is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. This wine is celebrated for its deep red colour, high tannins, and smoky dark fruit flavours with earthy bramble characteristics. It’s also commonly blended to create the famous Cape Blend. Taste Test: Pinotage can be polarizing – some adore it, while others don’t. It’s worth tasting a few to form your own opinion. Experience South Africa's unique wine heritage with Winelands Private Transfers. Let us guide you through the vineyards and the rich history of Pinotage. 🍷 #FunFactFriday #Pinotage #SouthAfricanWine #WinelandsPrivateTransfers #WineLovers #Stellenbosch

Our Vineyard Partners are selected very carefully! We prefer extreme character within an appellation; location, soil, aspect, elevation and personality. Philosophical alignment is paramount, as our growers must also be dedicated to creating top quality, unique, delicious, exquisite wines. We spend a lot of time in these vineyards with our growers, in fact we have a “half day rule” – we only work with vineyards with a proximity wherein we can leave the winery in Sonoma, drive to the vineyard, spend meaningful time, and get back to the winery within half a day. Otherwise we simply would not be able to go often enough. Our objectives are to guide beautifully grown Pinot Noir grapes from these various single vineyards into the bottle; to express their individuality – we want all our wines to be different from each other; like children, with a thread of commonality but with very different personalities. Appellations: Los Carneros, Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, Green Valley of Russian River Valley, Sonoma County, Sonoma Mountain, Napa Valley, Yorkville Highlands, Bennett Valley

"The Wine Economist" editors Sue and Mike Veseth report their point of view on Cantina Tramin coop winery model: "Cantina Tramin is a great success. Could it be a model for other regions? Definitely yes if you are looking for a business model for cooperative success. In terms of organization, Cantina Tramin does everything right, especially in terms of creating strong incentives for winegrower members to produce the best possible grapes and no sacrifice of quality for quantity or collective reputation for individual gain. It is never easy to get collective agreement for such systems and many cooperatives failed in the past precisely for this reason. One key, we were told, is that Cantina Tramin is not too big so the families know one another and the social contract that binds the members together is as tight as the legal contract. (Not for nothing are Italian cooperatives called cantine socialle). So there is strength in numbers … so long as the numbers are not too big!" *NEW OFFER* Our latest offer is the compelling 2022 Barbaresco from La Ca Nova. As Atlas' Managing Director, Simon Larkin MW puts it, 'These wines are offered at such fair prices relative to their quality, that I would be hard pressed to name another estate producing this grade of wine at these kind of prices.' Need more convincing? Well, as Simon states, 'One hundred and fifty pounds doesn't buy you a six-bottle case of red Burgundy from an outlying appellation, let alone a Bourgogne Rouge from a recognised grower, and it might just get you a six-bottle case of a Cru Bourgeois in Bordeaux. But here, you can get a single vineyard Barbaresco from a top Cru and skilled winemaker.' 2022 was an unusual vintage, with no rain of note from November 2021 to March 2022. The vines are, however, incredibly resilient, and adaptable - with roots weaving their way deep into the ground in search of moisture. Timely showers in August and September helped the fruit to ripen fully and led to Marco harvesting his vineyards in the last week of September, despite an early harvest for some. This vintage offers considerable poise and balance as a consequence. To read Simon's full offer or to make a purchase, please see the link below: https://lnkd.in/exaZcrtg

Volcanic Crater Wines Thrive on Lanzarote's Lunar Landscape In the sweeping, jet-black expanse of Spain’s Lanzarote Island, an unconventional approach to viticulture has birthed the unique "Volcanic Crater Wines." This innovative method utilizes the natural hollows formed in volcanic ash to cultivate vines that produce distinct and flavorful wines. The process, deeply rooted in generations of ingenuity, harnesses the harsh and seemingly infertile volcanic terrain to cultivate grapes that reflect the island's unique terroir. Engineering Success in Harsh Conditions The vineyards on Lanzarote present a stark contrast to traditional grape-growing landscapes... https://lnkd.in/gREZD-Nd

Diamonds are not, in fact, forever. Our relationship with Peter Thompson’s singular Andrew Geoffrey Vineyard, perched at nearly 2000' near the summit of Diamond Mountain, ended after the 2019 harvest when Elton turned our focus entirely to the Robert Craig Winery estate vineyards. However, the wines produced from that decade of partnership are nothing short of extraordinary. Low-yield vintages tend to be our favorites here, and 2015 did not disappoint on Diamond Mountain. Yields were 50% down from normal on the volcanic slopes, and the resulting wines possess a depth and structure that is hard to replicate in more bountiful years. This offer is a rare one by definition, and only 30 bottles of this beautiful mountain Cabernet remain. https://lnkd.in/g2NrSmrs

L’Insolito 2021: The colour is medium straw. On the nose citrusy, but not very expressive. In the mouth nutty, with a freshness that makes the mouth water. The aftertaste is medium long. This Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC is made by Vicari winery in Morrro d’Alba. Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico is a subzone of the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC in the Marche region of Italy, the oldest winegrowing areas around Jesi. Both superiore DOC and riserva DOCG wines are made within the classico zone. The use of Verdicchio has been documented in the Marche region of central Italy since the 14th Century, but there is suggestion that the variety could have originated in Veneto, where it is known as Trebbiano di Soave. Historians believe that Venetians migrated to the Marche area after the plague, bringing animals and plants, and it is thought that Verdicchio was among these. The variety adapted well to Marche's terroir. Verdicchio is a versatile variety, used both for light, easy-drinking table wines, and for more complex, ageworthy examples. It is commonly lauded by critics as being one of Italy's best white wine grape varieties. For this bottle I paid 14.50 EUR directly at the winery, when I visited it during last year’s All Saints Holidays.
