Whether we're just starting out in our career or have years of experience, one thing is certain: growth happens when we push beyond our comfort zone. In a recent session with Professor Khosla, the class explored how important risk-taking is for career advancement. It’s tempting to stick with what we know, but staying in our comfort zone can hold us back more than we realize. For those just starting out, it’s easy to fall into routine and avoid new challenges. The best opportunities often come when we step up and take a risk, whether it’s volunteering for a new project, proposing a bold idea, or finding a mentor. It might feel uncomfortable at first, but that’s where growth happens. For seasoned professionals, it’s easy to get comfortable after years of success in our role. If we’re not pushing ourselves to take on new challenges and expand our network, we’re missing opportunities to grow. Taking risks might mean reaching out to new colleagues, exploring different departments, or stepping into leadership roles with daunting responsibilities. These new experiences and connections can open doors and move your career forward. We explored the challenges of risk-taking and how vital it is for leaders to push beyond their comfort zones. Many individuals are afraid of change. It feels safer to stick with what they know. That’s fine, but there’s a gap: business leadership often overlooks design as a go-to resource for problem-solving and innovation. The insight? Design thinking helps leaders spot opportunities others miss. When exposed to design tools, MBA graduates are more likely to integrate them into their decision-making. This leads to solutions that are more customer-focused, innovative, and differentiated. Are we doing enough for our middle leaders? In every organization, #middleleaders are crucial in bridging the gap between strategic plans and daily operations. This role is especially pivotal in international schools, where middle leaders in operational departments not only bring their local and professional expertise but also support educational leadership, often filling gaps in areas where there's a lack of necessary experience. Despite their critical role in translating strategic visions into practical actions and managing key assets like #talent, #facilities, #technology, #admissions, and administration, etc., these leaders face significant systemic challenges. They navigate not only the "us versus them" divide between educational and operational staff but also the implications of being local hires within the school hierarchy. These leaders often find their contributions undervalued. Challenges they face include insufficient recognition of their #strategic input, limited #authority in their operational areas, inadequate onboarding, and a lack of acknowledgment of their crucial role in creating an optimal learning environment. Robust support and #recognition from senior leadership is essential, particularly in the dynamic environment of international schools, where cultural differences and frequent leadership changes are common. #Middlemanagers are fundamental to the success of our schools. We must ask ourselves: Are we fully enabling and appreciating these key players, or is there more we could be doing?   What’s your take? 🎓 Excited to Share: Reflecting on My Transformative Week at Yale's Women’s Executive Leadership Program 🌟 This week, I had the privilege of participating in the prestigious Women’s Executive Leadership Program at Yale University. It was an extraordinary experience that exceeded all my expectations. Throughout the week, I had the opportunity to engage with leading business scholars and collaborate with an inspiring cohort of fellow leaders. The depth of knowledge and insight shared during the program was truly remarkable, and I am grateful for the invaluable lessons I learned. However, what truly resonated with me was the personal growth I experienced and the powerful network I was able to build. Being surrounded by such talented and driven individuals challenged me to push my boundaries and discover new aspects of myself as a leader. Moreover, the significance of attending this program at Yale's campus was not lost on me. It's the same city where my father immigrated to, in his younger years he worked in the Yale labs cleaning the monkey cages to my present opportunity to learn and grow as a future business executive at Yale is incredibly humbling. Reflecting on this journey fills me with immense pride and gratitude. I am deeply thankful for the support of my family, mentors, and colleagues who have helped me reach this milestone.
