Who Should Join? This network is for anyone passionate about preventing suicide, including those personally affected, frontline crisis responders, and supporters of affected individuals. Why We're Launching This Network: 🔹 Prevention: our cause is to prevent lives from being lost and reduce the wider impact of suicide in Calderdale. 🔹 Understanding: we can’t prevent something until we understand it better. 🔹 Need: we are in need of a space for understanding suicide on a human level. More than 700,000 people die every year from suicide. And many of us have been impacted by losing someone close in this way. We all feel under pressure, we all feel overwhelmed, we all suffer at times with anxiety and depression and it’s a huge concern for me as a leader with responsibility for the welfare of so many people. At Mitie, we do a great job at looking after the wellbeing of our colleagues, we have a solid Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), an extensive Learning and Development offer, and an army of visible Mental Health Champions on site, in every corner of our business. But still we’ve lost colleagues along the way to suicide and many others are still struggling with suicidal thoughts. The truth is that’s happening in your business too. Mind reports that as many as 1 in 5 people in the UK have considered taking their own life. We as a business community and wider society have a responsibility to do more. Unfortunately, like most things in life, there isn’t a neat, one size fits all solution. And talking is often viewed as an overly simplistic way forward, but I would suggest that by shining light on the issue we help to de stigmatise it. Providing a space for our communities to freely discuss their experiences without judgement will help us to break down the barriers of isolation that lead so many people to believing taking their own life is the only way out. That’s why we’re supporting the The Consortium for the Prevention of Suicide whose aim is to rally the business world to come together to share insight, funding, resources, and innovation in the fight against suicide. By collaborating and harnessing our collective strength, we can create a supportive and caring environment that encourages open conversations about mental health. It's #WorldSuicidePreventionDay 2024, with the global #SuicidePrevention community coming together as we do each year on #WSPD to talk about how we can prevent suicides and, for #WSPD2024, a collective call to #ChangeTheNarrative on #suicide. So what narratives do we want to change? 1) We need high ambition, and everyone to not just say we MUST get the suicide numbers down #TowardsZeroSuicide but we CAN get those numbers down. Too often the narrative has been one of low ambition; with low aspirations baked in to national strategies. Low ambition costs lives! Low ambition in suicide prevention kills people! 2) Let's reiterate that suicide can affect anyone and everyone can help prevent suicides...but help people understand how they can help not berate them for not helping previously or wag fingers at them and tell them it should be their 'responsibility', which pushes people away. 3) We need more people to #StartAConversation but acknowledge how hard it is to talk about suicide without basic awareness training, and recognise it can be traumatising, so a kinder, more helpful message likely to have more positive impact is 'Take the Training...Have a Conversation' directing people to the ZSA online awareness training. 4) We must shift away from the institutionalised, divisive, damaging focus on priority groups/areas/issues in cross-cutting suicide prevention strategies in favour of a co-ordinated, collaborative approach where "Everyone is a Priority for Someone". Prioritisation costs lives! Prioritisation in suicide prevention strategies kills people! 5) Collaborate don't compete. Or if you can't collaborate, at least peacefully co-exist, and don't compete. Competition costs lives. In the field of suicide prevention, competition kills people! 6) Shift away from the unhealthy institutionalised bias to #health, and educate everyone that suicide is not just a #MentalHealth issue, with many people ending their lives each year in crisis having no prior history of mental ill-health. 7) Both shift the narrative and make the necessary policy & systems changes, to educate everyone that suicide is a MEANS of death not a CAUSE of death. Continuing to refer to suicide as a CAUSE of death costs lives. Steering people away from talking about the actual causes of suicide when it's simply a MEANS of death is killing people! As you look at the posts, posters, articles, comments, media coverage today, keep an eye on content that's still calling suicide a CAUSE of death...and politely correct it please! And maybe take a screenshot and add it in a comment below so we can see how often this false narrative is fuelled. Hi #linkedin Yesterday was World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide is a major public health problem and It is estimated that there are currently more than 700,000 suicides per year worldwide, however it profoundly affects many more people. Suicide remains a critical global issue, affecting individuals and communities worldwide. No matter where you stand, there are many ways to be involved in World Suicide Prevention Day. THEME - The theme identified for 2024-2026 is ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide’ with an associated call to action of; ‘Start the Conversation’. - By initiating these vital conversations, we can break down barriers, raise awareness, and create better cultures of understanding and support. Facts and Figures resource attached! Here are some examples of how you can change the narrative on suicide over World Suicide Prevention Day and take these conversations through into our daily life: INDIVIDUALS 1 - Check in with loved ones: Taking time to reach out to someone in your community, a family member, friend, colleague or even a stranger – could change the course of another’s life. Look out for those who you think might be struggling and don’t be afraid to ask someone if they are suicidal; the offer of support, showing empathy and validating their feelings is more likely to reduce distress rather than exacerbate it. Encourage them to seek help and further support. Read more guidance on talking through suicidal thoughts and feelings in our resource here. 2 - Keep informed: Consider accessing training opportunities in suicide prevention and awareness to identify and support those with suicidal thoughts and behavior. Opportunities maybe available locally through workshops, online or in your workplace. 3 - Share your story: Individuals who have survived a suicide attempt or experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide often have valuable insights and can help us understand how the words and actions of others can be important. I attended the white paper launch of Project Hayat (Singapore’s National Suicide Prevention Strategy) this morning. Some key takeaways for me: 🕊️For every one lost to suicide, 20 more attempted suicide. 🕊️For every one loss, 150 people are deeply affected. Yes, it affects people who are NOT close to the person as well. 🕊️ What got survivors through dark times are not big gestures, but small actions of kindness, even from strangers. 🕊️Clear appeal from Project Hayat Founder, Former NMP Andrea Ong, that we need people with lived experiences to have the seat at the table, to inform corporates, community, schools and the government on what can we do better/ more I immediately reflect on what I can do personally. 🐘 Check in with friends to let them know I am thinking of them. 🐘 Appeal to the public to share your views, public consultation is still ongoing - QR code is attached in the photo. 🐘 Formed a working committee to evaluate our crisis intervention process at our workplace 🐘 Engage more organisations to share We Are Hear (Singapore) ‘s work so the community feel more equipped to hold space for difficult conversations. 🗣️Talking about suicide does not encourage suicide from really happening! 🗣️So do check in if you know someone going through a tough time, let them know you believe in them! As Suicide Prevention Month coincides with one of the most stressful times in the operational calendar and the most stressful times for those leaving home for the first time, take a moment to understand how you are feeling so that you can help others. There are lots of ways you can spread awareness, help others and yourself: 🎓 Educate yourself. There are tonnes of resources available. Find what works for you. Learn how to recognise signs, even in those you do not yet know. 🗣 Start conversations with others. I actually found the hardest part of my recovery was knowing how to articulate it. Recently I've been listening to Ren and I've never felt so understood, even though our challenges were different. If you've never been in this situation, give this song a listen - maybe it'll help when you do talk to those struggling. https://lnkd.in/eMx377Km 📢 Spread awareness. Within your teams, to your residents. Host wellbeing events, post on socials, add it to your handbook/apps. Creating a safe space and providing information on where and how to access help is vital.

We are honored to be joined by Chelsea Piatt, Georgia Chapter Associate Area Director at American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Chelsea will be presenting Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention. One of AFSP's flagship suicide prevention education programs that covers the scope of this leading cause of death, what the research has found to be the warning signs and risk factors of suicide, and the strategies that prevent it. Along with understanding the myths and spreading awareness, it is important to understand that there is hope in reducing suicide rates and providing support to those suffering the most. Peachtree Comprehensive Health also holds a monthly Community Support After Suicide (CSAS) support meeting, led by Julie Rand Dorney, MD and Dr. Kimberly Vay, LPC, CPCS, for those who have lost a loved one to suicide. The group is open for those outside of Georgia and is a safe space to connect with others who have experienced losing a loved one to suicide. Suicide prevention looks different for everyone. however, there is always hope and support available. Changing the Narrative on Suicide is a call to action to "Start the Conversation". This theme aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides. Changing the narrative on suicide is about transforming how we perceive this complex issue and shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support. In Australia nine lives are lost to suicide, a heartbreaking reality that impacts countless lives. While each loss is deeply felt, there is hope in our collective efforts to prevent suicide. By combining our tools, resources, services, and support, we can work together to make a difference and support those at risk. There is a number of incredible support services available that we value and work alongside including Lifeline Australia. And if you know anyone at risk, we encourage you to do the following and remember there is 24/7 support. You can help.
