My name is Jim and I've worked for Saint-Gobain since 2015. I have a chemical engineering bachelor's degree. Saint-Gobain was the first company that I worked at out of college out of university. I started at the Northborough R&D Center as a Research Engineer. 2 years later, I took up the position of Production and Development Manager at the Worcester plant. In 2018, I became Plant Manager at the Northampton plant. Then in 2020, I moved into a Product Management role and focused more on the strategic development of the Thermal Spray Powder business. This is my current job that I really enjoy.   👨💼 Can you tell us about your duties and responsibilities at Saint-Gobain Coating Solutions? One of the most important responsibilities as a Product Manager is to set prices and show that our business is profitable. In addition, I work closely with our R&D organization on product development. I connect them with our plant. To complete the triangle, all this work is driven by our customers. Finally, I carry out customer visits alongside our Sales Managers. I get to travel with them to interact with our customers. We try to understand their pain points and do our best to make them better.   😍 Can you tell us more about your character traits? I'd say at heart I'm a bit of a builder. I think I always thought I'd be some kind of engineer. When I was a kid, I loved building structures with Legos. Building has always followed me, and this natural transition to engineering came with age. And even though I'm now in a sales-oriented position, I still feel like I'm physically building when I think about the new products we're making, working with our R&D and our customers to get these products tested. So I have to build physically, but also in a more figurative frame of mind. I have to establish these relationships, whether with our customers, our plant and our R&D.   ✔ Do you have a good company story to share? In telling my career path, I recognize that I am very thankful to Saint-Gobain. The company is very supportive and committed to employee growth. I've been with Saint-Gobain for almost nine years, and I have no desire to leave.   🏆 What is your greatest pride at work? The greatest product of my work is surely the relationships I've been able to build. As a young Research and Development (R&D) chemist working in a dynamic paint manufacturing industry like Meyer PLC I was recently presented with an exciting opportunity: to train and enlighten a group of newly hired sales trainees about paint technology and product knowledge. While my day-to-day responsibilities primarily involve developing formulations/raising of manufacturing orders and bill of materials, sample development and improving product performance, this opportunity allowed me to share my technical expertise in a way that could significantly impact how our products are presented and understood in the market. The goal of the training was twofold: 1. To provide the sales trainees with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of paint technology, ensuring they could confidently discuss the science behind the products. 2. To enhance their product knowledge, enabling them to address customer needs effectively and recommend suitable solutions. To make the session engaging and impactful, I began by explaining the basic components of paint. Next, I delved into the types of paints we produce, aligning each category with common customer needs and explained to them the possible paints defects and causes This experience was rewarding, I initially intended on spending 30minutes but ended up taking 3hours plus as it allowed me to contribute beyond the lab, fostering a deeper connection between the technical and commercial aspects of our industry. By empowering the sales trainees with knowledge, I am confident that our customers will receive not just a product, but an informed solution tailored to their needs.
