Washing your hands with soap and water is still one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs and protect your health. Yet, millions in Papua New Guinea and billions globally still lack access to basic handwashing facilities at home, school, work, or health centres. For over 40 years, the European Union has been supporting access to clean water and sanitation in Papua New Guinea, and will continue helping schools, health centres and communities. The EU-funded Klinpela Banz Projek (WaSH 2), currently implemented by UNICEF and UNOPS, supports access to clean water and sanitation for the people of Jiwaka Province. Learning never stops. I briefly studied Somalia's issues with food insecurity / famine while I was enrolled in graduate school for my master's in international affairs. Fortunately, I was able to revisit the issue of food security through a recent training. The core elements and new ideas were presented. While doing the independent research course about Somalia, I examined and considered some of the variables impacting food security like on-going conflicts; the war between Russia and Ukraine; the presence of al-Shabaab; the current drought; the high price of food; the COVID-19 pandemic; price of importing of food; the supply chain; and the inability to get aid to rural areas – particularly the south.
