Qube's equity analysts have been locked in battle with each other for the better part of the summer. To spur the student equity analysts with a fresh wave of ambition, the office had a friendly competition. Points were assigned for tasks and, every week, the analysts would check in on a leaderboard. What was the prize? The coveted position of Student Lead: responsible for organizing social activities and keeping fellow analysts on top of housekeeping tasks. So, congrats, Travis! Travis pitched a company that landed in the portfolio and did a ton of early-phase research to get awarded the position. In addition, Travis and the others spent a great deal of time rebalancing households this summer which is important for returning each individual portfolio to its target strategic asset allocation. Fine-tuning portfolios to fit individual client risk, return, and liquidity needs is a critical aspect of portfolio management. Well done! #success #investors #stocks #equity

☑️ Wrapping up Week 2 of the Summer Analyst Programme Here’s what I covered this week: 👨🏻💻 Sales & Trading: Stepped into the shoes of an Investment Bank Sales Trader, navigating the complexities of multi-asset client flows and mastering risk management in a high-pressure environment. 🌽 Commodity Trading: Tackled real-world challenges by trading energy derivatives and managing price risks during simulated scenarios like Hurricane Harvey. 📈 Quantitative Trading: Got stuck into Python, building an algorithm to automate market-making bringing the power of coding into the financial arena. 📊 Advanced Market Making: Pushed my strategic thinking to the limit, engaging in sophisticated market-making and hedging with derivative products. 💭 Behavioral Finance: Explored the psychology behind trading decisions and put my skills to the test in a competitive live trading scenario. This week offered invaluable insights and practical experience that I will undoubtedly carry with me throughout my future career in finance. I’m also very pleased to announce that I also placed in the top 5 out of over 120 participants for the commodities trading simulation and the newly introduced block-chain simulation, both of which were extremely engaging. This is how you learn technicals faster than anyone else: Do more questions more times. Over more hours. Then practice delivering them, More times over more hours. - A 2nd-year analyst at Warburg Pincus once mentioned how he still reads the BIWS LBO guide... "basically, weekly" He’s a 2nd-year analyst, went to Wharton, and interned at Blackstone in his 3rd-year. So, yeah… If anyone was going to get it right the 1st time, It'd be this guy, What this proves about technicals, (like literally any other subject, topic, or course of study) Is that it's not something you look at once, And never touch again. You keep studying it, Until you realize don’t need to. 4 years ago, I wish I knew that… Because the time I spent looking for that secret sauce, Amounted to nothing more than self-doubt & frustration. - This is how it went for me, 1️⃣ I went through the 400 questions in the summer of my 1st-year & did weekly mock interviews.   After only a month off, I had forgotten almost all of it. 2️⃣ Then, 2 months into 2nd-year, I studied them again for my first IB interview . The ramp up was faster this time… But again, as my focus turned back to networking, I regressed. A month passed… Then the penultimate summer cycle came, 3️⃣ And again, I ramped up… The stakes were at their highest. I landed an IB offer and didn’t touch them for the next 13 months. But right before my summer with Moelis, 4️⃣ I ramped up on them again. Though much of it has stuck since then, I still look at them here and there to ensure I’m on point for any mock interviews with students. ➡️ Point is, If you’re frustrated the concepts aren’t sticking… Know that you’re not doing anything wrong. It’s a LOT of stuff and much of it bears no resemblance to your courses in school. It will take awhile, And it won’t be fun, But it will be worth it. 🚀
