KAM Head of Corporate Communications and Marketing Lawrence Njenga, MPRSK spoke during the Africa Business Ethics Conference, earlier today. Mr Njenga, underscored the role of business ethics in driving sustainable industrial growth and economic prosperity. “Business ethics serve as the cornerstone of sustainable growth and development," he emphasized, highlighting their importance in building trust among stakeholders, fostering compliance, and promoting equitable competition. Njenga pointed out the alarming cost of corruption in Kenya, which is estimated at 5-10% of GDP, a stark contrast to the manufacturing sector's 7.6% GDP contribution. He outlined KAM’s commitment to ethical business practices, urging companies to adopt codes of ethics, establish whistleblowing policies, and provide training on anti-corruption measures. He stressed the need for accountability and transparency across both public and private sectors, encouraging businesses and individuals to report corrupt practices. “Corruption is not just a government issue; it’s a collective challenge. Every business, organization, and individual has a role to play in upholding ethics and fighting corruption,” he stated. #KAMAdvocacy

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Dararith Kim Yeat, Founder of the Parliamentary Centre of Asia (PCAsia), and Mr. Christophe Pallez, former Ethics Officer of the National Assembly of France, for their invaluable visit and insights. Our discussion centered around the proposed ethics framework drafted by Mr. Christophe, exploring key issues that need to be addressed from Malaysia's perspective. It was an enriching exchange, and we are optimistic that this initiative will significantly enhance accountability among members of parliament. At the last regional conference, the C4 Center emphasized the urgent need for PCAsia to lead the development of a comprehensive code of ethics framework for parliamentarians. Such a framework would serve as a guideline for member states to adapt within their legislatures. In Malaysia, for instance, the lack of a dedicated code of ethics for members of parliament is a glaring gap. The current reliance on a few standing orders fails to address critical issues, such as conflicts of interest (COI). COI remains a pervasive issue, even among national leaders who champion anti-corruption efforts. Many do not fully grasp how COI serves as both an enabler and a manifestation of grand corruption. We are hopeful that this collaboration will pave the way for more robust ethical governance, setting a higher standard for accountability across the region.

Those in the accountability community must follow strict independence and ethical standards in performing their work. The U.S. Government Accountability Office's Government Auditing Standards, a.k.a. the Yellow Book, provides the foundation in this area. The insightful guidebook shared below offers practical considerations and steps to audit and review ethics and integrity units of organizations. #ethics #integrity #leadbyexample
This handbook by The Ethics Institute aims to provide guidance on the reporting and auditing of the organisational ethics and integrity component. Without a strong ethical culture, it would be impossible for governing bodies to have confidence that they are being managed effectively. International and local corporate ethics failures, together with large-scale corruption and state capture have left stakeholders and regulators with the belief that more meaningful transparency is both desirable and possible. These developments signal that greater transparency is required from governing bodies to external stakeholders. To bring this about there would need to be a concomitant transparency from management to these governance structures. Governing bodies can only report on information that they are aware of. This requires improved information management in organisations, and structured and meaningful reporting to the oversight structures.
