Global Compact Network Kenya in partnership with Safaricom PLC, successfully hosted the third and final peer-learning session for companies participating in the 2024 Climate Ambition Accelerator Program. This session equipped participants with practical tools and insights to advance climate action within their organizations. As businesses strive toward achieving net-zero emissions, the session represented a pivotal moment in aligning corporate strategies with science-based targets to limit global warming to 1.5°C by 2050. It brought together United Nations Global Compact participants to foster knowledge-sharing, practical learning and innovative solutions tailored to Kenya’s unique context. Participants gained hands-on experience in developing climate ambitions and robust greenhouse gas (GHG) management strategies. The session also delivered a blend of global best practices and localized implementation strategies, ensuring actionable outcomes for Kenyan businesses. The program, facilitated by Global Compact Network Kenya (GCNK)’s John Ndirangu Mahianyu, PMP® and Safaricom PLC's Valentine Cheruiyot, featured Safaricom’s Principal Engineer for Energy, Joseph Akaka Otemba, PMP, who shared the company’s climate strategy and highlighted its leadership in integrating sustainability into operations on the path to net zero. Haco Industries Kenya Limited Environment and Sustainability Manager Oscar Obonyo (mEIK), Assc.(NEMA), (mIAIA) (mISSP) presented the company’s focus on renewable energy and emissions reduction, offering participants a replicable blueprint. Sharon Okwany of poa! internet and Kevin Getobai of Ololo Farming Company, shared real-world challenges and solutions, illustrating diverse approaches to implementing climate action. Through these in-person peer learning sessions, participants are now better equipped to champion the transition to a net-zero future, delivering long-term value for the environment and their stakeholders. Today we proudly joined Kenya Power for the launch of their Sustainability Strategy, a significant milestone in advancing sustainable energy practices in Kenya. With the theme “Energizing a Sustainable Future,” the strategy is rooted in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), showcasing Kenya Power’s commitment to ethical, sustainable, and inclusive business practices. Speaking at the event, Eng. Aggrey Machasio General Manager, Business Strategy, outlined the strategy’s key focus areas: Environmental Stewardship, Robust Governance, Social Responsibility, and Economic Resilience, all aligned with strategic pillars such as Financial Performance, Customer Centricity, Operational Excellence, and Human Capital Development. Delivering remarks on behalf of CEO Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror , Stephen Vikiru Kinadira General Manager, Finance, highlighted Kenya Power’s adoption of the Just Energy Transition (JET) framework, integrating social & environmental responsibility into its operations. He detailed key initiatives, including the development of a nationwide e-mobility charging network, promotion of energy-efficient cooking solutions,& clean energy sourcing, with over 92% of Kenya’s electricity already derived from renewable sources. Vikiru described the strategy as a transformative opportunity to empower lives & protect the planet for future generations. Kenya Power Board Chairperson Joy Mdivo reaffirmed the company’s alignment with global sustainability goals, including the Paris Agreement & the SDGs. “This alignment is not merely a strategic imperative but a moral obligation to safeguard resources for future generations,” Masinde stated. Chief Guest & Executive Director of Global Compact Network Kenya, Judy Njino, commended Kenya Power for the launch of its strategy & called for bold action to address systemic challenges such as climate change, energy access, & inequality. “With over 80% of Kenya’s energy mix derived from renewable sources & initiatives like smart metering and grid modernization, Kenya Power is leading the charge toward a low-carbon future,” she noted. The 5th Africa Business Ethics Conference (ABEC) is scheduled to take place on December 5, 2024, in Nairobi, with Global Compact Network Kenya serving as a key partner. This pivotal event will tackle Africa's most pressing economic challenges while advocating for ethical business practices across the continent. With the theme “A Brave New Africa: Business Growth in a Time of Economic Turbulence,” the event aims to provide actionable strategies for businesses navigating today’s uncertain macroeconomic landscape. During a media briefing yesterday, Global Compact Network Kenya reaffirmed its role as a key partner in ABEC 2024 with the Executive Director Judy Njino reiterating the need for ethical practices to address systemic barriers to development. Speaking at the media briefing, Judy Njino, challenged stakeholders to drive meaningful change, combat corruption and work towards a sustainable, ethical, and prosperous Africa. She noted corruption drains essential resources, widens inequalities and erodes trust, stalling progress on goals ranging from poverty reduction to quality education, healthcare, and environmental conservation. ABEC Convener and Founder Ms. Fatma El Maawy noted the growing importance of the conference as a platform for ensuring ethical business practices across the continent to drive sustainable growth. Ms El Maawy noted that this year’s theme resonates deeply with the current realities we face, as economic instability, illicit financial flows, and the ever-present threat of corruption continue to undermine our collective potential. She noted Africa loses $60 billion annually to illicit financial flows and over $140 billion to corruption. The conference aligns closely with the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact, particularly the Tenth Principle on anti-corruption in promoting transparency, accountability, and ethical business conduct. Since its inception in Kenya in 2019, ABEC has grown into a prominent platform for private-sector advocacy on ethics and governance. It has expanded its reach with conferences in Nigeria (2020), Kenya (2021), and Botswana (2023), each addressing unique regional challenges while fostering collaboration across industries. The USAID-USAWA Consortium Partners, led by Global Compact Network Kenya, held a consultative meeting with the Chairman of Akadimi Foundation James Arthur Rice where he acts as a senior advisor for ministries of health, health system providers and integrated care systems globally.   The meeting discussed strategies for strengthening health governance systems and integrating ethical leadership and anti-corruption practices within Kenya's healthcare sector.   The USAID-USAWA Consortium comprises Global Compact Network Kenya (GCNK), Transparency International Kenya, Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK KENYA), and the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK). Together, they aim to reduce fraud, waste and abuse in the healthcare sector across five counties in Kenya. James Arthur Rice, who has worked in over 35 countries across the world, offered valuable insights on robust governance frameworks and international best practices that can prevent systemic corruption through preventive strategies. This is in line with Akadimi Foundation’s mission of promoting better health outcomes through strong health system governance and leadership globally. Global Compact Network Kenya hosted a policy dialogue on "Legislations and Directives on Business and Human Rights" and their impact on the Kenyan private sector. The event brought together stakeholders from government agencies, the agricultural sector and diverse industries affected by these laws and regulations. The dialogue provided a collaborative environment to discuss emerging issues in business and human rights, including the legislation and directives impacting businesses in Kenya. Stephen Kimenye, speaking on behalf of Global Compact Network Kenya (GCNK), emphasized the importance of creating a responsible business environment that respects human rights. He noted that with increasing international regulations, companies are under pressure to adopt ethical business practices to meet these standards. James Mwenda Mwongera Senior Human Rights Officer at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, highlighted that enhanced collaboration and adherence to business and human rights legislation would not only bolster a company’s reputation but also drive social progress in Kenya. Christina Arrumm, senior human rights officer at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, guided participants through the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). The UNGPs provide businesses with a framework for responsible conduct and addressing human rights abuses in their operations and global supply chains. Enock Nyachae, Sustainability Project Manager at Danish Industry, underscored the importance of adhering to key legislative frameworks to remain competitive. A panel discussion featured representatives from United Nations Global Compact participants, including Edna Kiunga Kiptoon, Chief Human Resource Officer at M.P. Shah Hospital, Waithera Mwai, Head of Communications at East African Breweries PLC (EABL), and Janet Kabaya, Gender & Human Rights Manager at Kakuzi Plc. They shared their experiences and insights in implementing business and human rights policies and overcoming challenges in their sectors. Yesterday, representatives from the private and public sectors convened for a stakeholders' validation meeting on the "Corruption Risk Assessment and Management Guidelines." This was organized in partnership between Global Compact Network Kenya (GCNK) and the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC). The meeting aimed to validate the guidelines developed to help organizations identify and mitigate corruption risks. In line with the Tenth Principle of the United Nations Global Compact on anti-corruption, Global Compact Network Kenya (GCNK) Executive Director, Judy Njino, emphasized the importance of the guidelines, noting that they will empower organizations of all sizes and types to recognize and mitigate corruption risks effectively. Judy Njino also highlighted the longstanding commitment of the Global Compact Network Kenya (GCNK) to fostering ethical business practices, which are essential for sustainable development. Representing the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission, the Director of Preventive Services, Vincent Okongo, MBS, 'ndc' (K) noted that through the Corruption Risk Assessment Guidelines, the Commission seeks to empower public and private entities to conduct their own corruption risk assessments and take responsibility for reviewing their methods of work. Global Compact Network Kenya (GCNK) has been at the forefront of anti-corruption initiatives in Kenya, having closely worked with the EACC in the development, adoption, and operationalization of the Bribery Act of 2016. This collaboration included the creation of model procedures for preventing and reporting bribery and corruption. CIC Insurance Company a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact since June 2023 has released its inaugural sustainability report under the theme “Securing Futures, Building a Sustainable Africa” in a ceremony attended by Global Compact Network Kenya, Executive Director, Judy Njino. The report highlights CIC’s commitment to operational excellence & embedding sustainability in business strategies anchored on four pillars touching on Environmental Stewardship, Social Responsibility, Economic Resilience, and Responsible Governance. With only 17% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets currently on track and 33% either stalling or regressing, Ms. Njino acknowledged the contribution of the cooperative movement in Kenya in driving economic development, promoting inclusive growth, and social responsibility. The global challenges further present market opportunities for CIC Insurance Group to scale efforts in deepening financial inclusion while addressing emerging climate & social risks.   In his address, CIC Insurance Group Chairperson Dr. (h.c.) In partnership with Safaricom PLC, Global Compact Network Kenya hosted a peer-learning session for companies participating in the Climate Ambition Accelerator (CAA) program, creating a platform for sharing best practices in climate action. Led by Safaricom’s Valentine Cheruiyot, Agnes Kariuki and Global Compact Network Kenya’s John Ndirangu Mahianyu, PMP®, the session delved into key areas covered in the six-month CAA journey, where participants learned practical skills to drive climate action within their organizations. Participants were taken through an overview of Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions which also focused on developing a comprehensive GHG inventory, covering emissions across Scopes 1, 2 and 3, with practical exercises and live discussions to guide accurate emissions tracking. Corruption is bad for society and bad for business. Financial, operational and reputational risks are severe. 46% of companies with revenues over $10 Billion experienced corruption or fraud.
