We hosted Kenya's first co-creation workshops on drone regulations. From July 29-31, 2024, WeRobotics, Kenya Flying Labs, and #DeloitteD2international joined forces to host Kenya's first co-creation workshops on drone regulations. This workshop brought together Kenyan drone/RPAS users from across a wide variety of backgrounds.—from STEM educators and drone pilots to regulators and policymakers. Innovation Takes Flight: SKYMAX Drone Assembly & Testing Lab Opens in BUIST 🇧🇼🚀 A collaborative effort between the Drone Technology Centre BW (DTC) and Botswana International University of Science & Technology - BIUST reached new heights with the official opening of the SKYMAX Drone Assembly & Testing Lab. The ceremony, graced by the presence of The Honourable, Mr Slumber Tsogwane, prominent stakeholders, and esteemed Ministers, marked a significant milestone in Botswana's journey towards technological advancement. The SKYMAX Drone Assembly & Testing Lab will be a hub for innovation, fostering the local production and testing of the SKYMAX drone – Botswana's very first locally assembled drone. This state-of-the-art facility signifies a commitment to domestic drone technology and its vast potential applications in agriculture, search and rescue, security, and environmental monitoring. This collaboration between DTC and BUIST demonstrates our dedication to nurturing local talent and fostering a vibrant drone ecosystem within the country. The lab itself features cutting-edge equipment and technology to ensure efficient and high-quality drone assembly. Additionally, a dedicated testing area will allow for rigorous flight performance evaluation, guaranteeing the reliability and safety of SKYMAX drones. This project is expected to generate numerous benefits for Botswana. It will create skilled jobs in the drone technology sector, contribute to import substitution efforts, and position Botswana as a leader in drone innovation & assembly in Africa. Collaboration with BUIST further strengthens the link between academia and industry, fostering a culture of research and development. Commercial Drone Applications in Finland

After operating and building civil drones for more than 20 years in many parts of the world, I’ve come to realize the critical role regulations play in the drone industry’s growth and development. When I was younger, I believed technical progress was the most important driving force for stimulating the drone industry and increasing adoption for different applications and use cases. But now, I see that developing smart drone regulations is even more important for fostering industry growth. I’ve seen how impractical, bureaucratic, and prohibitive drone regulations can strangle drone businesses at every stage, from applications to manufacturing and development. On the other hand, I’ve seen how smart regulation can dramatically boost the growth of drone business and foster development. Seeing this play out in a number of different contexts, I found myself asking: How do we design smart drone regulations? How can we adopt best practices, implementing what works while avoiding regulations that hinder industry growth? As part of the Wakanda Beyond Peer Action Group, we’ve created a resource called ‘Designing Smart Drone Regulations.” This resource walks through a brief history of drone regulations, identifies problematic elements of existing/historical drone regulations, and highlights elements of successful drone regulations What are some sure-fire ways to fail? → Treat drones as normal aircraft and apply the same safety standards → Demand technical compliance when those technical solutions don’t exist yet → Make drone permits expensive → Have bureaucratic and slow processes to apply for and secure permits → Make sudden changes to regulations, without notice → Treat all drones the same – everywhere What are ways to succeed? → Create clear, understandable, feasible, and fast processes that are well communicated → Register drones and drone companies → Train drone pilots well → Separate crewed air traffic and drone operations → Effectively communicate and enforce no-fly zones and flight restrictions → Give operators, customes and investors clear roadmaps - so that they have planning security Want to learn more? Authorized Training Organizations are recognized by aviation authorities to provide formal training on drone operation. These programs ensure pilots are proficient in safety, regulations, and practical skills, setting a high standard for drone operation. Why is this important? ☑ Safety and Compliance: ATOs ensure drone pilots adhere to legal frameworks, enhancing safety for both the operators and the public. ☑ Skill Development: Training covers from basic flight operations to advanced drone applications, preparing pilots for diverse industry needs. ☑ Innovation and Growth: Certified pilots pave the way for innovative drone technology use, fueling growth in agriculture, conservation, logistics, and more. The Future is Here: Kenya’s ATOs are more than educational entities; they are breeding grounds for the next wave of drone professionals. This commitment to certified training is laying the groundwork for a future where drones are integral to economic and societal progress. In the picture, we spotlight Mr. @Francis Kigen (middle), UAS Technical Officer, and Ms. Lynette Shalwa (right), UAS Inspector at the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), who are responsible for overseeing Kenya's drone training and regulation landscape. When Lynette was questioned about Kenya's leadership in having numerous ATOs, she attributed it to the "enabling environment" that the country has fostered for drone technology. We celebrate Kenya's initiative in establishing a comprehensive framework for drone technology. Unveiling Opportunities: Insights into the South African Drone Market 💡 As the African continent increasingly becomes recognized as a center for drone technology innovation, Drone Industry Insights recently conducted an in-depth examination of the South African drone market through a survey published in December. South Africa's drone sector is bustling with activity, showcasing significant growth and diversity over the years. With a vibrant mix of small startups and SMEs making up 80% of the market, the ecosystem is ripe with innovation, particularly with Drone Service Providers (DSPs), hardware manufacturing, and drone training & education. The survey reveals South Africa's unique position, with its rich geography and robust GDP, as a fertile ground for drone technology, especially in agriculture, construction, and infrastructure monitoring. However, it also highlights the challenges ahead, including the need for clearer drone regulations, increased funding, and overcoming domestic political hurdles. After a year-long collaboration between WeRobotics, Flying Labs Namibia and Deloitte #D2international, we are excited to share our comprehensive white paper on building robust local drone ecosystems in the Global South. This paper dives deep into the dynamics of proactive engagement with Civil Aviation Authorities (CAAs). Our joint learning project with Namibia Flying Labs resulted in the Flying Labs Drone Regulations Engagement Framework. This replicable framework can now be implemented and refined across the Flying Labs Network.
