The crowd was all ears as RaboResearch senior protein analyst Angus Gidley-Baird shared his insights at Cattle Connect, held recently at Tamworth’s Bective Station in Tamworth. When asked by Cattle Australia director Bryce Camm to identify one major trend driving the current cattle market, Angus believed the 7.7 million tonnes – the volume of Brazilian beef produced for the year to date – was the figure to watch. “I think that is a really interesting number, not because that is what they did this year, but because what might unfold next year.” “If it comes down five percent, is that going to be enough to create that competitive tension in the global market that is going to see us realise some of those record prices we have seen in the US market?” “Is the improvement in the Chinese market going to be enough with lower volumes out of Brazil to increase demand in that market? “So to me, that is an interesting thing to watch for the next 12 months.” The one-day event was a hub of knowledge, networking and collaboration, featuring breed displays, live demonstrations, trade sites and speaker presentations. Excited to announce that our timely analysis, conducted with a fantastic team including Thomas Bittmann & David L. Ortega, on the impact of the US #HPAIoutbreak on livestock price premiums is now available online. Our findings have implications for business owners and policymakers. Specifically, our study shows that; ·  Egg prices were more significantly affected than those of broilers and turkeys. ·  The #HPAIoutbreak resulted in a narrowing of the price gap between conventional and premium products including #organicproducts. ·  Increased #publicawareness of the outbreak contributed to reducing the price gap between conventional and premium products. During the 2024 ICAR/Interbull Centre Annual Conference in Bled many interesting topics were presented to the engaging audience. Session 1a. talked about decision support tools for the future with a focus on promoting sustainable farm management.   One of the speakers in that session was Dr. Margaret Kelleher from the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF). Her paper was titled: The Commercial Beef Value (CBV) encourages the adoption of sustainable and profitable practices in beef production. The calving season in Ireland is a concentrated period during the first three months of the year, involving three-quarters of the country's 1.6 million dairy cows. Many dairy-beef-sired calves are sold before six weeks old, as they require a Tuberculosis test for sale afterward. This often leads to market saturation and challenges in assessing the future profitability of these young animals. The ICBF’s introduction of the Commercial Beef Value (CBV) aims to address these challenges by evaluating the profit potential of non-breeding beef animals, especially young calves sold off-farm. These efforts align with the Presidential Initiative to create a Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, aiming to standardize production, improve animal health, and boost access to global markets. 𝐇𝐨𝐧. 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐥𝐡𝐚𝐣𝐢 𝐈𝐝𝐢 𝐌𝐮𝐤𝐡𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐡𝐚 highlighted the critical role of these ministries in tackling challenges such as livestock migration, breed improvement, and food security. The recent addition of Bauchi to the list of proactive states reflects growing momentum toward unified policies and impactful sectoral growth.
