Conference on “Smallholder Inclusion in Agri-food Value Chains in the Republic of Moldova” The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry of the Republic of Moldova (MAIA), in partnership with the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the German-Moldovan Agricultural Policy Dialogue (www.apd-moldova.de) project, hosted a landmark conference on strengthening small farmers' inclusion in agri-food value chains on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at the Palace of the Republic in Chisinau.  In front of 300 farmers and agriculture stakeholders, the Moldovan and international senior officials highlighted the crucial role of smallholders in ensuring food security and rural livelihoods. The conference emphasized the need for policies and initiatives that support small family farmers, especially for female and young farmers, such as improved linkages to markets, knowledge transfer, and above all, access to finance. The leading experts showcased successful models for Moldovan agriculture, such as the farmer-driven Chamber of Agriculture, which could also manage a mutual fund to better manage risks, access resources, and collectively participate in the market. The conference concluded with a declaration with a set of support options for small farms that build on the positive experience of the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Hans C. As I pause to reflect on the vibrant tapestry of Kenya's agricultural sector, I'm filled with admiration and gratitude for the immense contributions it makes to our nation and beyond. Kenyan agriculture isn't just about cultivating crops or raising livestock; it's about fostering resilience, innovation, and community strength. From the lush highlands to the sun-kissed plains, our diverse landscapes serve as the canvas upon which our farmers paint their stories of dedication and determination. In a continent where agriculture plays a pivotal role, Kenya stands tall as a beacon of excellence. Our rich diversity of climates and ecosystems enables us to produce a remarkable array of crops, from tea and coffee to horticultural products that grace tables around the world. But it's not just about what we grow; it's about how we grow it. Kenyan farmers are at the forefront of embracing innovation, whether through the adoption of modern farming techniques or the harnessing of technology to optimize yields and mitigate risks. Yet, amidst the successes, we cannot ignore the challenges that confront us - from climate change and resource scarcity to market volatility and infrastructure gaps. However, it is precisely in the face of these challenges that the resilience of our agricultural community shines brightest. With each setback, we rise stronger, more determined to secure our nation's food security and prosperity. Since the Genz lead revolution that led to the abortion of the finance bill, the government has turned it's attention to alternative sectors and farming hasn't been spared. Since the drop of the finance bill, the government has been introducing bill after bill targeting the farmers. Here is a list of agriculture Bills 1. Livestock Bill 2024 2. Mung Bean bill 2022 3. Agriculture Professional Registration And licencing bill 2024 4. Nuts and oil crops development bill 2023 5. Horticultural crop authority bill 6. Land amendment bill among others We also believe that more are still on the way. As key players in this industry, we are standing up to speak up and challenge these punitive laws that will challenge our food security and sovereignty. Together with other concerned citizens, we are standing up to challenge the government and demand accountability and I want to ask all my friends, fellow farmers and concerned citizens to join us in this fight. Food is one industry that affects all of us irrespective of your industry because you must eat every single day. Exciting things are happening at the intersection of agriculture, sustainability and global collaboration! 🌾 A powerful partnership is emerging between the Initiatives of Change (IofC) and UNDP through the Conscious Food Systems Alliance (CoFSA). This collaboration is bringing farmers together to share stories, exchange knowledge and drive positive change in sustainable farming. This partnership was sparked at the Caux Inner Development Goals Forum in July 2024, where IofC's Farmers’ Dialogue International (FDI) connected with CoFSA. Since then, the momentum has continued to grow, with an online event on 21 November where speakers from the FDI programme shared their experiences and insights on sustainable agriculture, personal transformation and values-driven farming. 🌾 Speakers like Claude Bourdin and George Kamau highlighted the history and guiding principles of the FDI programme, while Jayashree Rao of the Grampari development center highlighted the deep connection between personal growth and sustainable farming, offering a platform for farmers to learn and inspire one another. 🔗 This partnership is just beginning, with more discussions and collaborations ahead!
