From old-timey concrete to old timey salt marshes. In the UK, an idea thought dangerously radical 10 years ago has proven the validity of its underlying concept. In a time when many areas (perhaps most as flooding even reached the Sahara https://lnkd.in/eubqqmxR ) are seeing unusual levels of rainfall and flooding, a small area on the west coast of the UK may offer a glimpse of the possible where the will exists. https://lnkd.in/eRudQYka

The recent flooding in the country has really got us as a Nation looking inward to find what we have done wrong. In my view point the flooding in the Capital city and it's environs is a man made disaster, hear me out. We cannot be a people who are so reckless in the manner we dispose of garbage and expect it not to clog the drainage system. We cannot be building along the river banks and expect the river will not break its banks and wipe out the illegal settlement. We cannot cut down trees and cultivate on hill areas without building soil erosion prevention measures and expect that during heavy down the soil will not loosen and cause mudslide. We cannot be blocking original water ways with our urban development projects and expect that when it really pours the water will not trace its original path. we cannot build houses In swamps fill it up with Boulders and expect that mother earth will forget that once upon a time that was a wetland. In all this I want to blame the fellow citizens we appointed as leaders for looking the other way as environmental ills of all manner continue and do nothing because maybe just maybe a big brown envelope exchanged hands.😭☔. But also I want to blame you for not being accountable in the little things you do like refuse disposal and for not holding our leaders accountable. #kenyaflooding #mothernature #weCanDobetter #Reflections.

No matter how advanced engineering stormwater solutions become, nature will ultimately prevail. The simplest, yet often overlooked, solution is that rivers need room to move—they need to flood in the areas that are naturally floodplains. The name "Riverbend Road" should be a clear hint. When rivers are disconnected from their floodplains, flooding occurs in places that have never experienced it before. Water has to go somewhere. When land developers are given permission to ignore environmental concerns—especially in high flood-risk areas—we all pay the price. People are put at risk, properties flood, and insurance and property rates rise as extreme weather events become more frequent and intense. Developing in these areas and altering the landscape is irresponsible and puts communities in harm's way. This needs to be reconsidered on a national scale. I commend the Councillors who have stood up against this and hope other authorities follow their lead. The financial interests of developers should not outweigh the environmental considerations that benefit us all.

SUDs - Water sensitive urban design and planning is one of the keys measures for building flood resilience in cities with contextual site specific opportunities at different urban scales ..
Interesting article but it’s becoming a little old. Great to see the BBC reporting on the use of SuDS across London and I agree that we need to see more. However we are 14 years on from Flood and Water Management Act and still the government is only discussing “implementation pathways” for (the now infamous) Schedule 3. In this time we have seen the SABs come into force in Wales and the impact that has made. Sustainable drainage systems are one of the best ways we have to fight flooding in urban areas without the need to impliment mega projects at the cost of billions. Whilst they do require some additional space, this space is mostly doubled up with amenity, parking or landscaping. I would also disagree with the comment in the article that states SuDS rely on regular maintainece. Whilst, like any drainage system, they require attention, when designed right they can be less maintainace intensive than traditional systems. For example, in 2006, an independent study by Soenke Borgwardt found that with zero maintainace over 10 years, permeable paving permeability reduces to 10% (which is still more than sufficient)! A traditional gully would nearly certainly be blocked by this point. It seems that we still have a way to go before we see mandatory SuDS implementation and more than certainly will be outside of this Governments term.
