It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
Last week, we drove to Greenville, NC to drop Julia for her sophomore year at East Carolina University. We took our time, seeing family in Frederick MD and Raleigh, NC. We stopped whenever we felt like it, either to grab coffee, take a stretch or fix a broken mud flap. While in moments, we moved quickly and with purpose, there was no rush. We didn’t see the point in driving like hell, exhausted and stressed. Our commitment to getting there safely with our physical and mental well-being intact was paramount.
That’s not unlike our approach at Engine 58. While we will move quickly and with purpose, we recognize that great relationships and enduring business is a marathon. We are patient and committed to the well-being of staff and our clients. And we won’t displace those things to chase a buck.

Detroit. Move Here. Move the World.
Had a great conversation this morning with an engineer looking at moving to Michigan, from California. Since I did the same last spring, I shared some of my tips for getting plugged into the community locally, and exploring the state.
He shared this link with me and said he loves this video (and laughed he's played it about 30 times since making his decision) and asked me to help him locate all the places in the video so he can be sure to visit there.
Moving, even for a great opportunity, is a big decision. It's exciting and exhilarating, as well as challenging and frustrating, and at times, anxiety ridden. My advice is make 5 connections, BEFORE YOU GET HERE - one at your new company, and 2 from LinkedIn and 2 from either a Meetup group, or an association or group you want to join. And schedule coffee, drinks, dinner, lunch, or whatever for that FIRST weekend you're in town. Ask them to pick their favorite place to eat and meet them there. Have them share their favorites in the community, in the region and the state. And take notes so you can look them all up.
Doing this right away, when your feet just touch the ground in the Great Lakes State, will give you so much energy and inspiration to get out and make this adventure a really exciting and positive one, and give you a group of colleagues, and friends to build on.
If you wait, you're going to get caught up in unpacking, and learning your new job, and finding your way around. And before you know it, 6 months will have gone by.
My top Detroit picks for folks moving to the Detroit Region for the first time: Eastern Market Partnership on a Saturday morning for breakfast (crazy cool and wonderful energy), the Monarch Club rooftop bar (really fun views of the city at night), take in a Detroit City Football Club game in Hamtramck, walking tour of the city with City Institute, Parc restaurant in @Campus Martius Park, Buddy's Pizza for a little Detroit pizza, and Slows Bar BQ in Corktown. Remember, this is just your first weekend in town, so from here you make a list of the favorites for all the folks you meet. And it's going to be a great start to making this not just a place you live, but a place to call home.

Having spent the past ten winters hosting indoor track meets, I have learned a little about managing the multi-ringed circus of chaos it can become. Like all good things, it can be distilled down to a group of three.
If we need to do one thing right, it is to start the event on time.
If we need to do two things right, it’s start on time and excel at customer service.
If we need to do three things right, it’s all the easy stuff, AND remember to be grace-filled.
The competitors come from all over the state to enjoy our meets in Saginaw, but the winter season can present some travel challenges on Saturday mornings. One dreary day, the rain/snow mix that is all too common in Michigan was especially widespread. Thirty minutes before the scheduled start, our lights were on, but it was as if nobody was inside the building. However, the parking lot was gradually filling up, and I was optimistic that more athletes would soon start to arrive.
So, over the microphone, I announced a delay. It was a tough call as those who could NOT hear me would be the biggest beneficiaries. Unfortunately, those listening would have to pay the price and be forced to wait.
One loving parent disagreed with the decision. He quickly located me and offered a strong rebuttal in the form of a question: What are we teaching all these kids who woke up early and arrived on time?
All I could do was smile and say: Grace. It’s a life skill.

The start of a new school year always inspires me -- and offers me the chance to pause and re-center. I do so by returning to my purpose. This week, I will have the privilege of welcoming Detroit Country Day School's new upper school faculty to campus and will offer them this 3-minute video and time to respond to it.

Founder & CEO @ GreenTeam Building Services. We service, maintain, repair, replace, and install
Water and Wastewater Utilities for Class A office, Industrial, Institutional, municipal, and healthcare facilities.
Some moments become engrained in my soul.
Like the time when we took up all three parking spots at our first office.
The same one when we needed a 5th plumbing truck, and a 3rd vac truck.
The same one when we invested in lining equipment, and got a big PO the next week.
This feeling is addictive, and it is one that I continue to chase daily.
It is the feeling when a dream becomes a reality, when a vision becomes a real picture.
It’s a feeling that I wouldn’t trade for anything, because just like a young boy who has dreams of becoming something, I get to relive this feeling every once in a while.
The front parking lot is full, the back also. As of next week we will start parking on the grass.
This is the evolution of GreenTeam | Building Services, and the experience of all the feelings, is the reward for all the fighting it takes to get here.
This is the award, nothing fancy, just the re-assurance that we’re on to something big.
70+ employees this week, and growing daily.
Train is rolling, we’re gonna cover Florida in Green. The big question is, who is coming with us???
