At ACS, we’re excited to launch a new groundbreaking population cohort study – VOICES of Black Women – underscoring our commitment to better understand how this demographic is impacted by cancer disparities. This new study is designed to help better understand the multi-level drivers of incidence, mortality, and resilience of cancer and other health conditions among Black women in the United States, so we can better understand how to collectively address them. It will be the largest cohort study of cancer risk and outcomes among Black women in the United States. Breast Cancer Research Study Currently Enrolling Black Women The VOICES of Black Women is a study led by the American Cancer Society. The focus of this study is to better understand cancer and other health conditions among Black women. Participation in VOICES involves completing an online health and life history survey at enrollment and updating information twice a year for at least 30 years. Results from this study will help inform how to improve the health of Black women for generations to come. Is congratulations really in order here? As a woman who meets the criteria outlined here, my question is a valid one. What are you trying to achieve? Why focus on undiagnosed women? Is this a general black health history data grab? What is your end purpose and end use of this health history information if no cure is necessary? Will the black woman own her data afterwards? What is the underlying intent for this information? I have a ton more questions. Covid and women maternal health has shown us in very stark terms that health inequities are prevalent regardless of education, socioeconomic status or health conditions. The factor was the melanin in our skin and access to skilled professionals. Nothing has changed since the inception of our great US census bureau began the collection of statical data way back in 1821. I believe we can be more impactful in making true change in Black Women living on the East Coast and in the Southern States is to include Black women diagnosed with cancer in more clinical trials that are geared towards this population demographics true cancer profiles. This is not being done today. Your organization can have a serious impact on inclusion, which all of us in the USA welcome.

As a Black woman, I am proud to share this amazing partnership between Genentech and the American Cancer Society: The "Voices of Black Women Study" aims to better understand the drivers of inequitable cancer outcomes among Black women. Everyone should have access to early detection, effective treatments, and survival. Did you know that according to ACS, Black women are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than our white counterparts despite having a lower incidence rate? This is the stark reality that we face, which underscores the urgent need for targeted research and interventions. This long-term study will gather data from over 100,000 Black women between the ages of 25 and 55 across 20 states and D.C., from diverse backgrounds and income levels who have not been diagnosed with cancer. I very rarely share personal news/issues on LinkedIn. As many of you know, I lost my wife, Keiyana Fordham Pilson, to breast cancer. For generations, there has been limited research on the types of cancer that tend to affect women of color. This has created enormous disparities in diagnosis and survival rates for Black women. According to the American Cancer Society, Black women are 8% less likely to be diagnosed with cancer than White women, but 12% more likely to die if diagnosed. In an effort to drive research and address these disparities, the American Cancer Society has launched a study to better understand cancer affecting Black women.
