Due to the high number of water deaths in North Carolina this year, it is crucial to 'Play it Safe' when visiting the ocean, a lake, or a swimming pool. Recent reports revealed nearly 200 rip current rescues at our state's beaches during the week of July 4, with a tragic incident of a teenage girl drowning at Ocean Isle Beach. North Carolina ranks eighth highest in pool drownings since 2018, according to a Lending Tree study. It's essential to stay safe in the water this summer by educating yourself on rip currents and deep water safety. Remember, rip currents can be perilous and even the strongest swimmers can be pulled out to sea. If caught in a rip current, remain calm, swim parallel to the shoreline, and signal for help if needed. Here are some vital tips for water safety: - Heed Warning Flags: Red flags signal strong surf, yellow flags indicate moderate surf, and green flags suggest calm waters. Always swim near lifeguards and be cautious. - Learn to Swim: Understand the differences between ocean and pool swimming. Use well-fitting life jackets for non-swimmers and adhere to the buddy system. - Pool Safety: Always supervise children, avoid pool drains, and know CPR. Install proper fencing and alarms for added safety. By taking precautions and being aware of potential dangers, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable water experience this summer. Stay informed, stay cautious, and have a great time while staying safe! #riskmanagement #lifesafety #fireandrescue #watersafety

The National Drowning Report 2024, released today at Parliament House, Canberra, found there were 323 drowning deaths over the past 12 months, which is a 16% increase on the 10-year average. Whilst progress has been made in some areas, drowning numbers remain persistent. This report highlights the importance of providing universal access to swimming lessons and lifesaving skills. It also illustrates the necessity of ensuring lifesaving services are present at the places and times where people are choosing to swim. The Hon Anika Wells MP said the Australian Government was committed to supporting organisations like Royal Life Saving – Australia and Surf Life Saving Australia to raise water safety awareness, ahead of summer. “With some simple precautions we can all enjoy the water safely. Always supervise children around water, learn swimming, water safety and lifesaving skills, wear a lifejacket when boating, and always swim between the red and yellow flags,” Find out more @RoyalLifeSaving & @SLSAustralia: https://lnkd.in/dheZKgyr https://lnkd.in/gHAz95VR

New York's Pool Enclosure Law ensures that swimming pools, or any contained body of water intended for swimming, are equipped with proper enclosures to prevent accidents. Here's a breakdown of the essential requirements: ✅A minimum four-foot wall, fence, or barrier between the pool and the residence. ✅Motorized safety pool cover or self-latching doors with direct pool access. ✅A 4-foot high fence all the way around in-ground pools with a closed, child-proof, self-closing gate. ✅There should be no overhead electrical conductors installed within 22.5 feet of the pool.
