The Importance of Access to Dental Care We all know that dental care and oral hygiene are crucial for maintaining overall health and wellbeing. However, the cost often prevents people from accessing basic checkups, x-rays, or cleanings, let alone fillings, dentures, or full extractions. Our teeth play a vital role in our lives. They not only help us chew and digest food, but also aid in clear speech. Additionally, teeth contribute to the natural shape of our face and enhance our overall appearance, boosting confidence and self-esteem. Thanks to the Clare Foundation, our W.A.L.K. Programme is in a fortunate position to provide dental care and financial support to wāhine in desperate need. These wāhine often require dentures, and tooth extractions, or are experiencing crippling pain due to years of neglected care. A bright smile empowers wāhine. A healthy smile can even influence our social lives, job interview success, and improve relationships. Happy, a prisoner in the Bronx Zoo, from Facebook. I'm relaying information. KCB 🚨 URGENT: Happy needs your help more than ever. The toll that a half century of captivity has had on Happy is again on full display in the #BronxZoo exhibit yard. After 10 weeks of confinement in the barn, Happy was finally seen in the exhibit yard this week. This photo–one of several taken Sunday by an NhRP supporter–shows Happy lying on a dirt patch with her eyes open. We don’t know how long she was lying down (outside the period in which our source saw her via the monorail) but she did get back up only to almost immediately lie down again. This is one of several times Happy has been observed lying down this week. As far as is known, this pattern of lying down in the exhibit yard isn’t normal for Happy. From the time we began monitoring this exhibit in 2018 until her disappearance from view this summer, we and our sources only ever observed Happy in a standing position in this yard. The photos also show significant damage to Happy’s feet which itself raises serious questions about Happy’s health. For example, why is she choosing to lie down during the few hours she has available outside? Is she trying to find relief from joint and foot pain caused by decades of standing in the exhibit? Does she spend most of her time in the barn lying down as well? Because of the zoo’s refusal to be transparent, we can’t definitively answer these questions, among countless others. But we and the elephant experts we’ve consulted with continue to suspect something is seriously wrong with Happy, and the zoo won't acknowledge it publicly. 🚨 You can help by 1) sharing this post 2) contacting the Bronx Zoo via social media or their customer service line to politely urge them to #FreeHappy and #FreePatty to a sanctuary. Whatever is wrong specifically, it’s appalling that the Bronx Zoo has put the suffering of elephants on display for decades–favoring its own interests at the expense of Happy and Patty’s. In the end, though, the dire, unjust situation these elephants are in is about something much bigger than the Bronx Zoo. It’s about the fact that elephants lack the legal right to be free from unjust captivity–captivity that slowly but surely destroys them in body and mind. 🎁 My niece recently received these dolls as a present. Within less than an hour several limbs had snapped off. Her grandad quickly offered to take the doll to the workshop for a bit of ‘surgery’. 🏥 A long conversation ensued about doll hospitals, which I’d not previously heard of. The grandparents and great aunties all had stories of what repairs or indeed surgeries their doll had been through. There was a doll hospital on the high street at the end of my dads road and indeed on many high streets. 👩⚕️ I was fascinated by this really wonderful example of repair in action, and interested in the emotions and behaviours around caring (rather than chucking) it evoked. What can we take away from this? 1. Including toys in #extendedproducerresponsibility requirements (a la France) provides an essential policy foundation for the toy making value chain to take responsibility for products from design to disposal. 2. #ecodesign - we must design for long-life and #repair, not just for #recycling (but that too) 3. Product and audience specific approaches to changing behaviours could be effective - think hospitals (repair) and fostering (lease) services for dolls. ❓ Do YOU remember doll hospitals? ⭕ Is there a role for them in our circular future? 🏥 What do you think the doll hospital of the future looks like? ****** P.S. 🐾 Sometimes life's greatest lessons come with four paws and a wagging tail. At 27, I fell head over heels for a photo of a dog online. Despite my husband's initial hesitation, we welcomed Waffles into our home. He was our gilded sun – sweet, lazy, and perfectly stubborn. What we didn't know was that Waffles would become a pretty profound teacher. Two weeks after adoption, we faced a crisis: Waffles collapsed, in excruciating pain and unable to use his back legs. What followed was a whirlwind of emergency surgery, months of rehabilitation, and eventually a second surgery and a lifetime regimen of medication. Through the sleepless nights, credit card swipes, at-home rehab sessions, and countless vet visits, Waffles taught me invaluable lessons that I use in both my personal and professional lives: • Caring is an action, not just a feeling • Value life before money • Patience and resilience will get you through anything Through Waffles, I met Dara Koppelman, RN MHSA, whose own journey with her beloved dog Johnny paralleled ours in many ways. After both our special boys passed, she introduced me to Aussie Rescue of the Mid-Atlantic (ARMA), an exceptional organization in the DMV. Their thoughtful approach to matching dogs with families that will adore them resonates deeply with my own experience. I recently had the privilege of creating a video for ARMA using Waymark, hoping to capture the same spark I saw in their dedicated volunteers. It's pretty great that #AI advancements can help me pay forward the profound impact Waffles had - even in a small way.
