Working in services designed to assist people in need, that's a job for people high in empathy and concern for others. As such, helping people in the throes of mental health crises, often presenting with suicidal ideation, can be traumatic - and the impact, regardless of the success of an intervention, can be a lasting one. Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council’s Public Health team have recognised that there is a need to gauge the manner in which these encounters affect frontline staff, and to seek ways to ensure that they are supported and helped to deal with the after effects of these events. To this end, they have teamed up with Blackburn with Darwen Community Network to address the needs of your frontline staff and volunteers – and we could really use your help. We’re currently trying to learn more about what you’re doing to help your staff and how we can help support you to support them. We’ll be putting on a workshop (so stay tuned) but, first, we have a short questionnaire (just ten questions) which we would be most grateful if you could fill out to help us understand your needs as an organisation. This World Safer Internet Day, let’s break down the stigma surrounding sextortion and online abuse. Statistics from the most recent headspace National Youth Mental Health Survey found one in five (22%) young people have had someone threaten to hurt them online or via their mobile phone. Experiences of online abuse – in particular sextortion – can have a big impact on a young person’s mental health. headspace Senior Clinical Advisor Jessie Downey said: “There are major barriers to young people seeking help after an experience of sextortion, including feelings of embarrassment or shame, and fear of backlash from others. “We are encouraging young people, and the people that support them, to be aware of sextortion, to understand that it is not the young person’s fault and encourage reaching out for support if it is happening to you.” Read more about our findings and our advice for young people: https://bit.ly/3SwbgV0

A new, comprehensive report on youth mental health in Canada is sounding more alarm bells. Published by Mental Health Research Canada, the report shows a continued decline in youth mental health, which is particularly pronounced among marginalized groups such as 2SLGBTQI+ communities, newcomers, and Indigenous youth. Also, while 20% of youth accessed mental health services last year, an additional 9% remain in need of care but are not receiving it. Lots to be concerned about here, but the report does make evidence-based recommendations to improve youth mental health by enhancing prevention efforts, improving the quality of mental health services, and expanding access.

According to Mental Health UK research, one in five adult workers reported taking time off work in the past 12 months due to poor mental health caused by stress.
