🌊 The next King Tides, the highest tides of the year, are coming up December 13–15, 2024, and again January 11–13, 2025. While the King Tides can be an awe-inspiring sight on Oregon's Adventure Coast, they do not create the massive wave crashes seen at Shore Acres State Park—those are caused by high surf with 20-30-foot swells. Continuation from the previous post.............................. Yes, King Edward VIII renounced his kingship to be with Mrs. Wallis Simpson, the lady of his life since the early 1930s. Just because of a woman, George, Princess Elizabeth's father(King George VI) who never dreamt of becoming a king ascended the throne. Just because of that single action, Princess Elizabeth who was never thought would have become Queen became Queen. A 'mistake' from just one man (King Edward VIII), completely changed the future of both lineages. Then someone will say "let me just do this after all it doesn't matter" Who told you it doesn't matter? Sometimes we take our actions for granted; other times we make them look as if they don't matter, whereas they do. Those things we belittle have a way of creating a big hole in our lives. Those little things we joke about have a way of impeding our future and the futures of others. I concur with the saying that the sins of the fathers are upon their children and children's children. Because, a little mistake from one person can keep generations swimming in the hot soup of miseries. Our actions today are true determinants of what we get tomorrow; If we plant a healthy seed today it bears a lot of healthy fruits tomorrow; however, if it's a rotten seed it will continue to worsen our lives and probably the lives of others. Learn a little more about the Saints we celebrate today!

My time as Queen is coming to an end. This past May, my boyfriend won an incredibly competitive 'crown' tournament where the winners become Prince/Princess for a few months before they step up as King/Queen for the remainder of their reign. It is the highest honor one can achieve in the hobby. The world is broken up into 20 kingdoms, and every kingdom's reign is of a different length, but none is longer than a year. Why? It is incredibly draining. Emotionally, physically, financially. We knew what we were getting into, but I was still terrified. I didn't want to just be a good Queen. I wanted to be a GREAT Queen. My kingdom is the Kingdom of An Tir, which encompasses the U.S. states of Oregon, Washington, a small portion of Idaho, and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Spoiler: it's a lot of people to make a good impression on. Now, as we're wrapping up our last two months, I have begun treating my position as I would with any real job position. Gathering feedback, good and bad. Looking at the analytics and then numbers of each event (we have one almost every weekend) to see if there was an increase of attendees and if they stayed the entire length of the royal court, which some can find boring. Some feel this takes the magic out of the role. To pick apart what worked and what didn't. Dig into the actual statistics, venture into A/B testing, and even compare what I did versus other Queens around the world during their reign. It's a slippery slope to not take things personally, especially being a competitive person, but my love for the game persists through. The SCA, Society of Creative Anachronism, which is solely run by volunteers, would not continue to survive without these moments of how we can all do better. I just prefer to have my initiatives have a bit more data backing them. I have loved my time as Queen. And while my data supports that I did great things, I will truly treasure all of these personal moments of presenting well-earned awards to those also trying to do great things.

To coin Shakespeare, "What's in a [charity's] name?"..... With the news yesterday that The Prince's Trust, the young people's charity, has, after 50 years, changed its name (and logo) to The King's Trust, I reflected on the great history of charity and those who have, for a variety of strategic or practical reasons, changed names. A charity's name is arguably the most fundamental and valuable element of its brand identity, shaping how it is perceived, trusted, and supported. Name changes often arise as part of a wider rebrand, when a charity is seeking to refresh its image, or appeal to a broader or different audience, or to better reflect its mission, goals, or values. At other times, it is part of an expansion or shift in focus, when a charity expands its geographical reach, or diversifies its services. In a 'busy' sector, names can be changed to distinguish a charity and to avoid confusion amongst the public with other charities with similar names. When charities merge or partner with other organisations, a name change is reflective of a combined entity, or a shared vision, moving forwards. Legal or regulatory reasons may necessitate a charity to change its name, for example if another organisation has the rights to a similar name. Sometimes a charity's name becomes associated with controversy, or negative perceptions, and so a rename can help the charity distance itself from that and start afresh. A new name can be part of a fundraising strategy to increase visibility, or to align with similar causes which are more relevant to the public. And or course, a charity may change its name because the original one is culturally insensitive, or no longer appropriate in a modern context. From a charity law (and company law in the case of charitable companies) point of view, there are certain requirements of a charity in terms of its name, and restrictions on what can and can't be included. Certain words also need specific permission before the Charity Commission will register. (Consideration should of course always be given to intellectual property considerations too.) In addition, the Charities Act 2022 extended the Commission's powers in relation to charity names (including working names), such that the Commision has the power to direct a charity to change its formal name in a range of circumstances, and indeed will not register a charity if the proposed name is, for example, misleading, or offensive.
