🐝Biodiversity Day on 22 May – From biodiversity commitments to concrete actions🍃 Biodiversity loss is as urgent as climate change. But until recent years, the discussion around it has lacked the same urgency and intensity. The ambitious Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework set in 2022 provided the needed push to bring global leaders together to solve these challenges.💡 Although several actions fall on states, businesses have a crucial role to play. See the 6 ways how we in Stora Enso are #PartofPlan: 🌍We are committed to a net-positive impact on biodiversity 🌍We strive towards this goal with active management on landscape, habitat, and species levels 🌍We monitor progress and adapt actions with biodiversity indicators 🌍We have developed a framework to model biodiversity actions and their future impact 🌍The framework enables us to manage biodiversity and wood production side-by-side 🌍We collaborate with researchers and nature organizations to leverage the latest research A lot remains to be done but we are on our way. Next Wednesday 22nd is International Day for Biological Diversity, a day dedicated to promoting understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. Biodiversity, including the variety of plants and ecosystems, are the pillars of our civilisation, providing food, medicines, and basic healthcare. The theme for 2024 is “Be Part of the Plan” highlights the urgent need to move from agreement to action in order to achieve sustainable biodiversity. The call to action from the United Nations is for all stakeholders to reverse the loss of biodiversity by adopting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which sets goals to stop and reverse the loss of nature by 2050. The framework includes measures such as restoring 30% of ecosystems and reducing food waste by half by 2030. The plan also emphasises the interconnectedness of biodiversity and climate change, both of which need to be addressed to secure a sustainable future. Happy #BiodiversityDay!🌿 Find out how science-based targets for nature help companies take credible action to address #BiodiversityLoss. 👇 Biodiversity loss threatens Earth’s capacity to maintain the healthy ecosystems we need, and this must be addressed urgently. For business, biodiversity loss also presents physical, regulatory, financial as well as reputational risks. 📈 Yet businesses’ activities contribute to biodiversity loss through actions like changing the way land, freshwater, and ocean are used, exploiting resources, and contributing to climate change, pollution and invasive species’ prevalence. 🏭 Through science-based targets for nature, which are aligned to the Global Biodiversity Framework, companies can take credible action to address biodiversity loss – while increasing their business resilience. 🎯 A core goal of SBTN’s work is mitigating biodiversity loss by ensuring companies contribute to the protection, restoration and sustainable use of natural ecosystems. It is therefore essential that all actions taken through the targets effectively support biodiversity. 🌳 The first release of science-based targets for nature directly supports biodiversity by addressing some of the dominant drivers of biodiversity loss. We address the coverage of biodiversity in the first methods release in a technical paper, and present high level approaches to address gaps. Let’s try not get lost in the biodiversity jungle! Biodiversity is the variety of life in nature, society and businesses have various well-known ways to destroy biodiversity described by IPBES. (We can also look at more operational root causes for destroying nature’s ability to function in FSSD.) When we need to measure “biodiversity” as we say, it can and need to be done in nature, e.g. recording sound, collecting DNA and analyze this to see variety as well as specific studies. Businesses however also need to keep in mind to go "upstream" and measure their input that gives impact, which as we know from climate is a lot easier, to measure how much fossil fuels we use compared to the impact of that in nature. Like Cecilia Cronwall at Mission Anew said on AGFO talk recently, if you use a chemical/pesticide that will kill of various species/insects you don’t need to measure the effect in nature, instead measure and find ways to stop using the chemical that will kill of biodiversity, life in nature. Difficult, yes of course sometimes it's really difficult but this is the journey towards sustainability that we’ve been on for decades and even the first global conference on environment 1972. We need to scale up and increase the work on bending the curves for climate and biodiversity and we also need to accept that this means scaling up our environmental work. Which is not new, with well known topics and solutions. Quite frankly if we had not collectively failed in doing enough the state of biodiversity and climate would not be as it is. So is biodiversity complex and working for biodiversity sometimes complicated, yes but less so if we try to understand how it all fits together with our environmental and sustainability journey. Instead of only seeing this as new, the "new part" is the urgency in avoid, reduce and restore. I approach this subject in my key-note for Nefco. We need to work both on increasing biodiversity in nature and production landscapes and at the same time radically decrease or STOP contributing to the negative drivers. Biodiversity and climate have always been at the heart of a sustainable development. #agfotalk #biodiversity #sustainability https://lnkd.in/dn8MqWzG

On Biodiversity Day - or International Day for Biological Diversity, to give it its full name - our #sustainabilitynow blog explores how firms are integrating biodiversity into decision-making. But there are 6 key challenges to overcome. #allianzglobalinvestors #sustainability
On this year’s Biodiversity Day, stakeholders are encouraged to be “part of the plan” in recognition of the collaborative effort required for this critical issue. For us, this means putting the topic at the heart of our engagement strategy and highlighting some specific challenges. Revolutionizing Sustainability: #BiodiversityCredits #CorporateImpact #IndigenousPartnerships Key Takeaways: - Biodiversity credits finance protection and restoration of ecosystems, benefiting both nature and local communities. - Effective governance, indigenous partnerships, and corporate integrity are essential in the biodiversity credit market. - Biodiversity credits must complement, not replace, comprehensive company strategies for reducing negative environmental impacts. Further Insights 1. Biodiversity Credits: Biodiversity credits are financial tools enabling companies, communities, and countries to support biodiversity through direct funding of conservation and restoration projects. 2. Collaborative Approach: Development and procurement of biodiversity credits should be collaborative, involving indigenous communities as key stakeholders and ensuring their free prior and informed consent. 3. Corporate Responsibility: Purchasing biodiversity credits should be part of a broader sustainability strategy that includes reducing a company's own environmental footprint and regenerating nature within its operations and value chains. Closing Thoughts: As we move forward, how can companies ensure their investment in biodiversity credits truly contributes to sustainable development and respects the rights and wisdom of indigenous communities?

Can precision seabed harvesting technology be an effective tool in kelp restoration? 🌱 We believe so! Our most recent project - #OceanGreen - led by our Chief Impact Officer Dagny-Elise Anastassiou- is featured in this article in the Economist Impact, highlighting the importance of restoring biodiversity and building knowledge of our underwater ecosystems. It is estimated that as much as 80% of kelp forests along the Norwegian coastline has disappeared over the past 50 years due to overfishing and ocean changes. Restoring these underwater forests are paramount to not only life under water, but also for the wider environment. Over the next few years, the Ocean Green project will utilise Ava Ocean's seabed harvesting technology to efficiently clear urchin barrens and enable kelp regrowth. Together with our consortium partners, Wild Lab Projects, NIBIO Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research, Norsk institutt for vannforskning (NIVA), Akvaplan-niva, Hofseth BioCare ASA and Wandering Owl, the project also aims to develop novel products and increase knowledge about these vital but lesser known underwater ecosystems. We join an increasing group of exciting projects working towards restoring kelp and finding nature positive solutions for thriving oceans both in Norway and abroad, and we are excited to share our progress along the way! Through the Norwegian Green Platform, funded by Innovation Norway, Norges forskningsråd and @SIVA, the Ocean Green project has been awarded a total of 47 million NOK to support the project over the next two years. -Øystein Tvedt - Anette Grøttland Zimowski - Geir Ingebrigtsen - Sverre Olav Farstad - Norselab - Ocean 14 Capital - Hofseth International
