Ramboll has released Americas Biodiversity Metric 1.0, a free tool to measure the biodiversity value of sites across the Americas. Developed in collaboration with NatureServe, the metric can help organizations, businesses, governments, and other land-managing entities quantify biodiversity value under various scenarios and track progress against established targets. Quantifying biodiversity value can support sustainability goals such as #NoNetLoss and #BiodiversityNetGain, ultimately underpinning #NaturePositive commitments. What does it take to achieve a true biodiversity net gain? The first step is clear: You need to understand the baseline. Biodiversity has often been ignored in sustainability discussions, partly due to the sheer complexity of ecosystems. Unlike carbon footprints, where well-established metrics exist, biodiversity lacks universal and easily comparable indicators. This makes it even more crucial to develop a standardized, quantitative approach that can be applied globally. At Ramboll, we’re dedicated to addressing this challenge by working on methodologies that can accurately measure and track biodiversity impact. What is the status of Dutch biodiversity? Our Global Head of Business Development, Sander Keulen, spoke with Het Financieele Dagblad about how eDNA technology can help map the current state of nature. As the Netherlands faces the most severe biodiversity loss in Europe, urgent action is essential. It's great to see the country embracing innovative technologies, including eDNA, in its efforts to combat this decline and restore natural ecosystems. Which types of companies should be concerned? All of them. But speaking about our clients’ diverse needs, Keulen explained that we see growing demand, particularly from banks and major insurers, for data that show the economic consequences of biodiversity loss. Some of the other important questions highlighted in the article are: Is biodiversity declining or improving, and should we act?’ At NatureMetrics we help organisations address these questions through our eDNA technology and nature intelligence, which drives data-driven decisions on the ground. With this knowledge, our clients can make a meaningful impact in their biodiversity conservation efforts. Revolutionizing Sustainability: #BiodiversityCredits #CorporateImpact #IndigenousPartnerships Key Takeaways: - Biodiversity credits finance protection and restoration of ecosystems, benefiting both nature and local communities. - Effective governance, indigenous partnerships, and corporate integrity are essential in the biodiversity credit market. - Biodiversity credits must complement, not replace, comprehensive company strategies for reducing negative environmental impacts. Further Insights 1. Biodiversity Credits: Biodiversity credits are financial tools enabling companies, communities, and countries to support biodiversity through direct funding of conservation and restoration projects. 2. Collaborative Approach: Development and procurement of biodiversity credits should be collaborative, involving indigenous communities as key stakeholders and ensuring their free prior and informed consent. 3. Corporate Responsibility: Purchasing biodiversity credits should be part of a broader sustainability strategy that includes reducing a company's own environmental footprint and regenerating nature within its operations and value chains. Closing Thoughts: As we move forward, how can companies ensure their investment in biodiversity credits truly contributes to sustainable development and respects the rights and wisdom of indigenous communities?
