The time it takes to form a habit can vary widely depending on the complexity of the habit, the person, and the circumstances. A popular belief, often cited from Dr. Maxwell Maltz's work in the 1960s, suggests that it takes a minimum of about 21 days to form a habit. However, more recent research suggests that on average, it takes more than two months before a new behavior becomes automatic — 66 days to be exact, according to a study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology. Yet, the study also found that the actual range can vary from 18 to 254 days depending on the habit being formed, the person, and the conditions under which the person is operating.
