When burnout threatens to dim your passion, remember these key strategies: 1. Reconnect with Your "Why" Revisit why you came into education. The lightbulb moments in learning, the potential to shape futures—these are your fuel. 2. Micro-Moments of Joy Intentionally celebrate small wins - write a few down each day. A pupil's breakthrough, a staff member's achievement, a thank you, etc. Our brains work as velcro for the negative and Teflon for the positive! Switch that up. 3. Professional Boundaries Set clear limits between work and personal life. Protect your energy by defining non-negotiable personal time and learning to delegate effectively. Create an action that tells your brain - I'm done for the day. It could be taking off your watch, your lanyard, putting your workbag out of sight when you're home, etc. 4. Continuous Learning Invest in your professional development. Attend workshops, engage with coaching, network with inspiring colleagues who reignite your professional spark. 5. Self-Compassion Treat yourself with the same kindness you extend to your students and staff. Your wellbeing is the foundation of your professional impact. I'm Kirsty. I help exhausted female headteachers regaintheir mojo so they can meet the challenge without burnout.

Okay, let’s clear this up!! I had some DMs yesterday challenging me on my post about ALL the things that were causing some feelings of overwhelm, and my ability to talk about Burnout. FYI, I don’t just talk about Burnout. I’ve survived it, twice. And I educate and raise awareness after more than a decade of studying, qualifying, learning, working, creating and living and breathing it! I KNOW that I will NEVER reach Burnout again. Do I sometimes (often) fill my diary too much? Yes Do I work a lot? Yes Do I still experience stress? Yes But my diary, my work and my stress levels alone are not enough to push me to Burnout number 3 And this is why education and awareness are SO important. Working hard does NOT mean Burnout Times of stress do NOT mean Burnout And sharing that I’m in a point of overwhelm does NOT mean I’m not qualified to talk about Burnout - so off you pop!! But pushing too hard for too long and losing yourself in the process, can and very probably will lead to Burnout - that’s what you want to avoid!! Anyone else getting more negative DMs than usual? From people who are clearly stressed and taking it out on everyone else?!? (And thanks to Louise Adolphsen for my pic)

Finding a balance between hitting the books and hanging out with friends can sometimes feel like walking a tightrope. But guess what? It’s totally doable, and I’m here to help you figure it out. Consistency is Key: Consistency in your study routine is your best friend. When you study regularly, you create a habit that helps you retain information better and reduces the stress that comes with last-minute cramming. But life happens, right? Sometimes an unexpected event or an irresistible invite from friends comes along. The Art of Flexibility: If you’ve been consistent—say, you’ve had 89 study sessions out of 90—missing one won’t be the end of the world. In fact, it might be exactly what you need to recharge. It’s all about balance and intentionality. If you decide to skip a study session for some quality time with friends, make sure you’re doing it consciously and not making it a weekly habit. Make Up for It: One way to ensure you don’t fall behind is to plan a catch-up session. Maybe the next day is a bit lighter on your schedule, so you can double up on your study time. This way, you keep the balance and stay on top of your game. Social Interactions Matter: Remember, social interactions are crucial for your mental health and overall well-being. They provide a break from the monotony of studying and help you return to your work with a fresh perspective. So, don’t feel guilty for taking a breather now and then. Since I posted the graphic on the Burnout Continuum a few days ago, many of you have asked me about the signs of burnout - what to watch out for in yourself and others that may indicate you are moving along the continuum from Engaged to Burnout. I have created this graphic in response. Please share it with others if you think they will benefit from this information. Remember that Burnout is Exhaustion+Detachment+Ineffectiveness. One or two of these give cause for concern. If we reach a situation where we experience all three then we can be in trouble. We need to take action before we get to this point. When I burnt out, I had been exhausted for around 10 years. I took a year out in 2015-16 to travel around the USA and Central America on a motorbike but within a month of being back at work I was exhausted again. I experienced many of the signs of exhaustion - chronic fatigue, insomnia (made worse by hot flushes at night), anxiety (I described it as a sense of being hunted), increased infections and finally chest pain (that prompted me to seek medical help). Apart from the chest pain, the sign for me that something really bad was happening was the growing sense of detachment, manifested in an erosion of my belief in what we were trying to achieve as a school. There was also a lot of frustration that I was not making the progress I wanted to make and this made me feel ineffective. If I am honest, I became quite belligerent with senior colleagues as my frustration spilled over and our relationships deteriorated. I was convinced I was right but I realise now how difficult I must have been to work with. Then it all came crashing down in the space of a few short weeks and I was never able to return to the person I was, handling the level of stress and responsibility and constant interactions that had been the norm for 15 years. Don't let this happen to you. Don't ignore the inner voice that tells you something is wrong like I did. Take action to gain some perspective and prioritise your wellbeing before it is too late. #teachers #headteachers #principals #schools #EduChat #education

From unrealistic expectations to endless exams and assignments, students are often treated like machines programmed to achieve ‘perfect scores.’ 🎓 Grades over mental health. 📚 Deadlines over downtime. 🤯 Burnout over balance. Now, don’t get me wrong, I'm not against hard work. Success takes effort, discipline, and hustle. But here’s the catch: Hard work without balance leads to burnout, not brilliance. What if we focused on learning, not just performing? What if asking for help wasn’t seen as weakness? And what if rest wasn’t treated like a luxury but a necessity? Stress is not a badge of honor. It’s a sign to pause, recalibrate, and prioritize what really matters - your well-being. Work hard, but don’t forget to breathe. 💡 #WorkHardRestSmart #LearnNotBurn #EducationMatters #StudentsUnderPressure #MentalHealthAwareness #BalanceOverBurnout

Feeling Burnt Out? You’re Not Alone. Teaching is a demanding and rewarding career, but it’s also one that leaves many of us vulnerable to burnout. I know this all too well – after 25 years in the profession, I realised I was struggling by my 19th year and pushed on until I had no choice but to leave. The exhaustion was overwhelming. If you’re feeling the strain, take a moment to breathe and remember: Prioritise self-care – even small acts like a walk or journaling can help. Set boundaries between work and home life. Seek support from trusted colleagues or professionals. There’s still time to sign up for my LinkedIn Live event on Monday at 5pm: “Are you an exhausted teacher suffering from Burnout and Stress?” Let’s talk about strategies to regain balance and energy. 📅 Mon, Dec 2, 2024, 5:00 PM - 5:30 PM 💻 Hosted by Eva Carroll 🔗 Sign up here! https://lnkd.in/ehwxRnms #TeacherWellbeing #BurnoutSupport #ExhaustedTeachers #TeacherStress #SelfCareForTeachers #TeachersSupportingTeachers #EducationMatters #MentalHealthInEducation
