Speaker and Life Coach. Making a difference one person at a time

Making Mistakes and Failing Imagine you are about to do something for the first time. You have no prior experience and knowledge of how to do this new thing. You’re bound to make “mistakes”. You’re bound to “fail”. You’re bound to “mess up”. For example, last week, I attempted to make a dim sum dish that’s one of my favourites. 豉汁蒸鳯爪 - Steamed chicken feet, in black bean sauce. The recipe was straightforward and easy to follow. Yet, my result was nowhere near the recipe’s result. I may have missed a step or THREE. I could have steamed the chicken feet for another hour, as they were still quite tough. I didn’t get the cornflour ratio right. So, the sauce was too thick. I used too much black beans. I rarely cook with black beans, because I’m not a big fan of it. Now that I have “failed” miserably, next attempt is going to be easier. I am going to be able to fellow each step and probably won’t miss any. The chicken feet is going to be softer, because I am going to steam them for another hour. ✅ I am going to use less black beans. ✅ As for the sauce, it is going to be a thinner sauce. ✅ So, chicken feet or something else, when you are doing something for the first time, make the “mistakes” and “fail”. Why? These are the ingredients to getting results you want, because you are going to learn what works and what doesn’t, as soon as possible. #doingnewthings #makemistakes #failure

Many people quit trying to play an instrument because they weren't good at it on the first attempt. I suppose the same applies to some sports, or other activities as well. I just know this from dealing with people on a musical (or non-musical!) level. It seems to me that most folks prefer doing only things that they were good at on the first attempt, which limits them severely, and people love limits. For themselves and especially for others. If you quit something because you "failed" on your first attempt, you really didn't want to do the thing in the first place. That's my opinion. Linkedin might consider this Hate Speech, because it, too, loves limits.

Believe it or not, some of us are horrified at the idea of eating chicken feet. 😂 Cultural differences make us squeamish. Frog legs and caviar don’t do it for me, either. I am more ambivalent about dried insects but so far I’ve never tried them.

We learn from our "attempts". That's great you were able to identify what didn't work or what you missed.

Failing is never a problem especially in this case because like u said, it's new for us. The real problem comes Kit when we refuse to accept and hence, refuse to learn

There is no failing. Attempting, trying, learning, growing…even if it does not feel like that.
