Gjenkraft AS are thrilled to announce the signing of a framework agreement with Bergen Spesial Transport AS for the sustainable recycling of wind turbine blades. From now on, Bergen Spesial Transport AS will deliver all their wind blade waste for recycling at our facility.
This significant milestone helps establish a value chain in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, securing blade feedstock for the next three years. Our ambitions lead us to scale our production in Høyanger, aiming for a capacity of 1000 tons per year by 2025 with new machinery. This will enable Bergen Spesial Transport AS to provide only sustainable solutions for wind blades, eliminating landfill and incineration options.
We are excited to take this major step forward in our mission to create a green future.

How can we create a circular economy? 🤔
We all know that less “take, make, waste” and more “reduce, reuse, recycle” would be good for all of us – and the environment. But what concrete steps can we take to help to create a circular economy?
At Sappi, making what we should, not just what we can – from woodfibre-based renewable resources – is central to how we run our business.
So, we asked some of our colleagues to tell us what was key to them in creating a circular economy.
What is key for you?

Yesterday I had the honour of presenting Phoenix's battery recycling supply chain delivery map at Toitū Envirocare's 'Get ready for the future' webinar.
Getting ready for the future means knowing every aspect of your supply chain now; and it's carbon emissions profile. Knowing your base year for carbon reporting is extremely useful, to then enable progress to be reflected over time.
Now batteries; they are challenging, they have lithium chemistries and lots of sub-types; hard to pick if you don't know the difference. Batteries are enabling decarbonisation, and at their end-of-life they have a circular story if placed in the right supply chain.
Being able to communicate our delivery model transparently; and in our case knowing exactly our products' downstream circular solutions, validates our supply chain's core purpose for diverting batteries from landfill.
This requires our organisation to understand every step of it's supply chain, and ensuring we can deliver it every day, every month, every year. Are you asking the right questions?
Declared EPA permits for other waste batteries? (we know of activity in the NZ market without permits)
End-to-end insurance? (we know of activity in the NZ market self insuring)
Being a responsible recycler means we have:
Public & Products Liability - for activities handling, storing and shipping hazardous waste, including Lead Acid batteries, Lithium batteries, Nickel Cadmium batteries, Nickel Metal Hydride batteries and Alkaline batteries
For personal injury and property damage from sudden accidental events.
Contractors Pollution Liability - for activities relating to the collection and transportation of used batteries from various collection/sorting centres in NZ, the transport and unloading located to a NZ port facility where it will again be transported via water vessel, then unloaded and transported via road transportation to final destination recycling facilities.
For clean up, third party damage, legal costs, enviro/emergency response from pollution events caused by covered operations.
Specialist Motor Vehicle Insurance - for Phoenix's road transportation fleet to specifically carry Dangerous Goods, all battery types including lithium.
Marine Cargo Insurance - Covering consignments/ shipments of recycled batteries. For: Import/Export/Global/Local NZ/ Worldwide.
Jasmine Faulkner and her team have spent years to get this solution to market; and it's insured every step of the way - door to door. Always on. This is a specialist space requiring a specialist service. This is what Product Stewardship looks like in the end-of-life battery space. I commend Jasmine and her team for being so exceptionally thorough. You can't pick and choose which battery types you take; you have to take them all, to ensure we do the right thing by Aotearoa NZ.

🌍 Pushing the Boundaries of the #CircularEconomy
At Ardian, we're committed to driving sustainable growth through strategic investments in the circular economy. Our acquisition of Attero in 2023, one of Europe’s most advanced waste management companies, marked a significant step in this direction.
Attero’s innovative approach to waste management—from producing biomethane to recycling plastics—sets a new standard for sustainability. We plan to enhance Attero’s capabilities by implementing a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project at the Moerdijk waste-to-energy plant, making it one of the largest producers of carbon-neutral baseload energy in the Netherlands. This project is expected to begin construction in 2025 and become operational by 2029.
