😌 Checking out Milan Design Week on my feed got me thinking. In the past, I'd feel a bit envious of those attending, but this time, it didn't faze me. 🏗️ Working at Carpus+Partner AG has shifted my perspective on architecture. It's not solely about aesthetics; it's about purpose. 💡🚀 Our focus is on creating buildings that drive innovation. Well-designed classicism is timeless...

Sometimes comfort is success.

This is the week of London Design Festival. The Festival is a fascinating series of events, talks, projects and exhibitions throughout the entire city. There is plenty of conceptual art here, but most of the program deals with real design application – from light to space to furniture and product innovation. Plus, there is lots of fusion of ideas, for example, sustainability mixed with 3D visual worlds.   It is also interesting to see how brands are involved – and again, the range of companies participating is vast. There are the furniture grands like Boffi and Cassina, but also cars like Lotus or Technogym sports equipment. And there are installations in various business locations, for example, the famous Fortnum & Mason store in Picadilly. Apart from design in business, there are also important conceptual exhibitions, for example, a show devoted to exploration of the interplay between design and freedom of speech.   In short, if you can spare some time and attention for this, it will be greatly rewarding. This Festival is a showcase of what does design stand for now and all its different facets – technology mixed with current agenda, business, and our sensory perception of the world.   Most of the events in the Festival are freely accessible, some require tickets, which nevertheless are free, but you simply need to register. Together with the fabulous  gravity GmbH The Foresight Academy we have developed a unique project that demonstrates the potential of translating foresight knowledge into actionable products and day-to-day near future objects.  It also gives a starting point for rethinking product development and business rationale. Rethinking Ownership: A Lesson in Collaboration and Growth Recently, while preparing a presentation for a Women in Design award on behalf of Arris Atelier, I was reflecting on my singular contributions to the firm's growth, and, a question arose: can any single project be solely mine? As architects, we're part of a larger team, each member crucial in bringing a building to life. At Arris Atelier, collaboration is deeply ingrained in our practice, making individual contributions harder to isolate - yet every role is essential to the final product. This introspection unearthed another layer – a touch of imposter syndrome. Did I truly know enough to deserve such recognition? It's been a hurdle I'm actively working to overcome. The silver lining? A treasure trove of stories emerged. Looking back, I am able to see how countless design details intertwine to create a vibrant space. Each corner, viewed in isolation, feels perfect, culminating in the overall project's magnificence. Now, as these buildings come to life for their users, we gain a deeper understanding of our design choices and areas for future refinement. Eileen Gray said, "To create, one must question everything." This self-reflection led to beautiful realizations. What have you learned recently that challenged your perspective? Our Director, John Avery was interviewed for the June/July 2024 issue of Architecture Magazine (UK), talking about topics ranging from the impact of new technologies to the LOM studio’s shared vision, his personal design inspirations, and the future of the industry. Talking about workplace projects and how to support collaboration, productivity and wellbeing, John responded: "Collaboration, productivity and wellbeing have very different spatial and environmental demands, so the most important thing is to avoid one-size fits all space, and create architectural elements which meet the function. Collaboration needs the right mix of acoustics, privacy, flexibility and tech. Productivity needs workspace that brings people together, with an environment that allows focus as well as communication. Wellbeing sits across the whole experience and asks us to think about daylight, space away from the desk, access to the outdoors and comfortable spaces to eat and drink."
