I've been reflecting a lot on the development of Midwest 90: Rapid City. There had been many, many times where I felt the team and I were doing something wrong, because we have been working on this for nearly 4 years now and we are finally reaching "feature complete". Shouldn't we have been "feature complete" back in 2022? Shouldn't the game be ready for launch by now? I think the answer is - YES, it should have been... IF we just focused on development. But we spent a lot of time chasing funding for M90. That meant creating new polished demos every quarter. This strategy might work well for less complex games like platformers, action games and shooters but I believe it doesn't work for complex games (4x, management sims, grand RTS) with a lot of systems that interact with each other. I think our goal should have been to complete most of the systems first so that publishers and investors had the full picture of what the game is supposed to be, instead of having some systems ready and leaving the rest to the imagination. So here's my advice to new, small indie game devs who want to make a complex game with a blend of mechanics that are so unique- you don't have any good references to fall back on: 1. You need to spend at least 2.5 years getting the features ready first. Make sure you have the funds for this and the commitment of the team. You are going to see a lot of people having success securing funding for their action games much earlier in development. On top of that there are plenty of "funders" on platforms like this pushing for developers to send in their games as soon as possible. Don't do that, ignore the noise. Prepare to dig in and develop. Don't make demos until the product can effectively communicate the vision. 2. Playtest as soon as possible. You can playtest different components separately to get feedback on UI/UX. 3. Complex games require very effective and engaging tutorials. Get working on that asap. Do not leave this to the end. This was a really tough lesson to learn and somehow we're still making progress on M90...without securing any funding apart from grants. If we survived this long, so can you. Just be more prepared than we were.

New product: 2008 Dunhill Ruby Bark 5103 Sandblasted Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy. The successor to Dunhill’s Red Bark series, the Ruby Bark continued Dunhill’s use of a ruby red sandblast finish from the former with some additional design elements, lending it an extra air of distinction. The most obvious of these is the silver collar the Ruby Bark wears, but a more subtle addition is the highly traditional, beveled rim each features, reminiscent of a more classic mid-century style. This particular Ruby Bark is a group 5 size, so on the larger end of Dunhill’s typical output, with a ring grain sandblast so good I’m a little surprised that the stummel wasn’t reassigned to Dunhill’s dedicated Ring Grain series. I’m not complaining, however, as it might just look even better as a Ruby Bark. The condition is great. Some minor, inner rim darkening, but the pipe does not appear to have been smoked much by its single, previous owner, who sent it to us via our trade-in program. New product: Ferndown by Les Wood Bark 2 Star Bent Brandy Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates Ferndown pipes were made by the legendary British pipe-maker Leslie ‘Les’ John Wood, along with his wife Dolly. Both Les and Dolly previously worked for Dunhill, where Les developed his skills and reputation as Britain’s premier pipe silversmith, as well as one of its premier pipe carvers. Ferndown pipes are highly coveted by pipe-smokers due to their superlative craftsman(and woman!)ship, whose bowls are oil-cured and which typically feature beautiful silverwork. Sadly, Les and Dolly retired from pipe-making in 2016, making Ferndown pipes rather scarce – especially given how difficult it is to get their owners to part with them. This Ferndown is one of two to come to us this week through our commission program, and while Les and Dolly Wood’s pipes tend to be traditionally inclined, this one is far more modern and unique. It is from the Bark series, which combines rusticated and smooth finishes; this particular pipe, however, is a distinct, panel brandy, with its east, northeast, west, and northwest panels wearing the titular hand-rustication. Not only does this lend the pipe an interesting aesthetic, but these are the perfect places to add an extra bit of grip, especially as the pipe is – like many Ferndown pipes – on the larger side. The condtion is great. There’s a little bit of rim darkening, but it’s light and superficial. New product: Peterson Short 230 Rusticated Bent Brandy Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates - Available at MBSDpipes.com Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin. Peterson’s Short series is one of what could be called “nosewarmer” sized pipes, but as Peterson itself explains, the idea behind them is more to do with capturing the aesthetic of some of the make’s earliest (i.e., turn of the 20th century) designs. Back then, pipes were smaller, and this gave them a distinct look both when on a stand or the mantelpiece, or when they were being smoked. With that being said, just like nosewarmer pipes from other makes, they are eminently pocket-friendly, portable, and lightweight pipes. This one is a bent billiard, rusticated in the “weathered stone” style seen on other Peterson series, such as the Aran. The condition is great. There’s some rim darkening toward the front of the rim, but it all but disappears into the rugged finish the pipe wears.
