A Picture Paints a Thousand Words! DFL are passionate about putting the right lighting in the right place, and that means protecting the night sky from light pollution and the ever-increasing sky glow. For a moment, take a swig of your coffee and close your eyes. Envision a dark sky full of hundreds of stars. Be captivated by the breath-taking tapestry of twinkling lights that dance across the night sky in front of you! ✨ 🔭 Can you remember the last time you were able to see that many stars? They didn't go away, you just can't see them. When you hear that an estimated 85% of the UK have never experienced a truly dark star-filled sky, that's scary! Ryan Carroll has a lot to say on this subject and you can read his musings by clicking on the link in the comments below. It's a 5 minute read, grab that coffee and sit back. A tricky list of needs; DFL to the rescue! At DFL, we love a challenge and a new development at Cox’s Quarry in Bath, was certainly that! 🏠 The plan was for 6 new dwellings with associated car parking and access roads – sounds simple enough! Well, here’s the tricky part: • We needed to include external lighting but also the light coming from the windows in each building • Each building had a different layout, over 3 floors • The buildings weren’t all being built at the same angle • There was a strict 0.5 lux line position due to the ecology • The site was close to a 'Special Area of Consideration' • Also near a 'Site of Special Scientific Interest' • There was a significant population of Lesser Horseshoe Bats nearby ❓ How did we do it? At DFL we are committed to passing on knowledge and today it was all about the importance of health and safety on site. When our lighting designers attend site, we can ensure they are trained to be competent on site safety and are holders of the HERS competence card. DFL's LaMP Academy Lighting Technicians recently completed the HEA G39 course and passed their ECS health and safety test and today, we were outside, with Alistair overseeing and documenting their techniques. 🚗 Are Ultra-Bright Headlights Driving Safety Forward – or Blinding Us? 🚗 As lighting designers, we are attuned to how light transforms spaces—but on the road, it’s also about safety. TRL have been commissioned to investigate if ultra-bright headlights are inadvertently putting drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians at risk. Headlights today illuminate better than ever, but are we sacrificing surrounding safety for clarity? Balancing innovation with impact is a challenge we know well at DFL-UK. How do we illuminate without overwhelming? One point DFL's Richard Jackson made this week, when we discussed the topic was that "The use of "intelligent lighting" where the high beam are on but track any oncoming light, then dim the area around the light source, as to not dazzle the oncoming user, needs to be considered. The problem with the intelligent lighting is that it doesn't work that well for pedestrians and cyclists at the side of the road and also those turning out of side roads." as such we questioned whether the increase in people being dazzled is down to the wrong lights at the wrong time and not so much lights being designed too bright. Would limiting headlight intensity benefit road safety, or are there smarter design solutions? What are the Industry’s thoughts? https://lnkd.in/gnUhAwF4 #LightingDesign #RoadSafety #DFLUK

18 Years! That is quite something. Congratulations Director Andy! But what do our other two Directors have to say about Andy.... Richard: "I am pleased I'm still here considering I took Andy on a site visit in the early days. We had to visit a sensitive receptor that was 4km up a hill on the south downs...in winter darkness!" I wonder if that's when Richard became interested in joining Search and Rescue! Alistair: "Having worked with Andy in our previous employment, it was a no-brainer to employ Andy at DFL in 2006. He had the DFL ethos and was always destined to excel in the business. Can't believe it's 18 years though! #TeamSuccess #LeadershipJourney #WorkAnniversary #CareerMilestone #BusinessGrowth #DirectorAchievements #CompanyPride #DedicationAndCommitment

Dorset Surf Lagoon Planning Approved! In February this year the planning was granted for a surf lagoon in the heart of Dorset! 👍 It was such an exciting project for DFL to have been a part of, providing Dorset with significant improvements to the current Avon Heath Country Park, with a state of the arts surfing facility, which will produce white-water waves to attract surf elites, families and beginners. On top of that, there will be specialised equipment for an adapted surfing experience in a controlled safe environment. 🏄♂️ 🏄♀️ Want to find out more about the Issue, the Solution and the Eco Bit too!? Last weeks Highways UK event brought together nearly 400 of the leading companies involved in planning, developing and future-proofing the nation's road networks and it was a pleasure to be involved. We had the chance to meet up with old industry friends and also make a some key new contacts and DFL are all about working with other companies to find smart solutions. The DFL team featured Richard Jackson and Andrew Longman, along with Ryan Carroll and Ian Hearsum and of course the obligatory Lego competition! 🚗 📣 Congratulations to all those involved in making the event work and a special thanks to Katya and Jake at Full Vision Ltd for creating our stand. But.... what were the recurring topics that everyone was talking about? Has the change in Government stifled the construction industry or is this just a temporary glitch? Or are we feeling positive and looking forward to welcoming changes and new business? What are your thoughts? 🤔
