I am very pleased that our paper on optimising resource-constrained selective maintenance for fleets has been published in International Journal of Production Research, a prestigious journal in our field with a 10% acceptance rate and an impact factor of 7.0. The shortcoming of current models for the Fleet Selective Maintenance Problem (FSMP) is that they assume that individual systems in the fleet are eligible for maintenance activities at the same time (i.e. the break period is synchronous). In reality, long-haul trucks reach maintenance depots at different times, Naval ships return from missions and access dry-docks in different work periods, production lines and workstations undergo maintenance during different shifts. Thus, it is crucial to model the FSMP under asynchronous break windows. By introducing the FSMP with asynchronous breaks, this paper effectively bridges the gap between the traditional FSMP and the Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP). This work was led by two PhD students in the Department of Industrial Engineering (Alireza Amjadian and Ryan O'Neil). Thanks to them as well as the other co-authors on the team: Prof. Abdelhakim Khatab of Université Lorraine, Prof. Jing (Jenny) Chen, Professor & William A. On May 16-17, the European Engineering Skills Council held its second meeting in Brussels. President Klaus Thürriedl there represented the ECEC as a dedicated Skills Council member. During this event, the latest trends and actionable measures to shape the European Engineering Skills Strategy were discussed. Representatives of the educational and academic sector, the industry and professional partners as well as policy-making bodies were present, allowing for a productive meeting under many different perspectives.
