How does spatial proximity accelerate innovation? Forthcoming GIID research uncovers compelling insights into the role of spatial proximity in driving invention. By analyzing the backward citations of patents from a major European metropolitan region, we found that inventors often reference more recent patents developed locally. Our analysis shows that locally cited patents averaged just 7.5 years old, compared to 12.3 years for patents from outside the region. This means that intraregional connections enhance knowledge spillovers by an impressive 40%. Interestingly, the speed of local knowledge spillovers varies across different technologies. For instance, in the Cleantech sector, local spillovers were the fastest, with the average age of cited patents at just 6.5 years—approximately 47% faster than global spillovers. These findings underscore the critical importance of fostering local connections to accelerate innovation and enhance competitiveness. Stay tuned for more insights from our research. #Innovation #KnowledgeSpillovers #GIID #ResearchInsights #Patents #Cleantech
