🧠 Did you know your mental state can actually create or worsen the sensation of pain❓ Stress and emotions can play a huge role in how much pain you feel, and how you cope with it. 📚I just explored how the body communicates through pain in this insightful course, Vital Signs: Understanding What The Body Is Telling Us, led by Connie Scanga from UPenn’s School of Nursing. Focusing on somatic, visceral, and neuropathic pain, the course dives into how these different types of pain affect the body and how psychological factors can amplify or influence these experiences. 💡Key Takeaways: ➡️Different types of pain = different origins: Pain isn't one-size-fits-all! Somatic, visceral, and neuropathic pain each come from different sources in the body, and recognizing these distinctions is crucial for proper treatment and care. ➡️Our mind can amplify pain: Psychological states like stress, anxiety, or depression can actually intensify the experience of pain, making it worse than the physical cause alone. 📖Some facts learnt: ☀️Our brain doesn’t just feel pain; it can also magnify it. Anxiety, depression, or even poor sleep can make pain feel worse than it is, showing just how strong the mind-body connection really is. ☀️Long-term pain can actually reshape the brain's neural pathways, making it more sensitive to pain over time. This means that effective pain management isn’t just about treating the body, but also addressing the psychological concerns. ☀️Did you know that even after a limb is amputated, people can still feel pain in the missing body part? This phenomenon, known as phantom limb pain, is caused by the brain's interpretation of signals from nerves that once controlled the limb. Understanding these fascinating aspects of pain helps us see that it’s more than just a physical sensation—it's deeply connected to our mental and emotional states! #Healthcare #VitalSigns #PainManagement #Psychology #Wellness #MentalHealth #UPenn

Here’s the proof that anxiety is a nervous system issue, not a mindset issue. Medications designed to alleviate anxiety immediately (Benzos) such as Xanax, Klonopin, or any of the like - the reason they do work so well right away is that they essentially tell your nervous system to “take a nap”. And once your nervous system “takes its nap”, your anxiety drastically reduces or even goes away completely. Your body feels calm, your thoughts calm, everything is calm. Great, right? Well not so fast. That can be really helpful if you’re using it to get through a short-term stressor that’s causing anxiety, but if you’re using it to cope with anxiety in general, it's not so great. Because what happens when it wears off? The anxiety comes back immediately, and sometimes even worse which is called “rebound anxiety”. This is why these medications can be so addicting. It’s continuing to put a band aid on the issue day after day, but never actually healing the wound. The only way to heal the wound is to HEAL your nervous system through a combination of neural + somatic practices as well as learning how to reprogram your subconscious beliefs (which cause your thoughts). COMMENT “NEURO” to get my 5-step guide to learning why you haven’t been able to shake anxiety yet and exactly what you need to do to fix it. 🧠 XO, Kerry ❤️⚡️ . . . . #nervoussystem #nervoussystemhealing #nervoussystemregulation #neurologicalfitness #neurologicalfitnesscoach #neurofit #neurofittrainer #somaticexercises #somatichealing #anxiety #anxietytips #trauma #traumahealing #cbt #mindset #mindsetcoach #anxietytherapy #anxietyrelief #anxietyawareness #anxietysupport #mentalhealthawareness #womensmentalhealth #highperformingwomen #floridatherapist #newyorktherapist #nervoussystemcoach #holisticanxietycoach

Okay, hear me out... Have you heard people saying that they believe in the idea of "live and let other live" or "let go of people who have hurted us", may be like "forgive and forget" and is this process really that easy? Now the catch is that our bodies and minds have intricate ways of processing experiences, including conflicts, arguments, disagreements or other emotional scars. Even if we consciously forget the details of a conflict, the emotional impact can still be stored in the brain regions or our bodies like central and autonomic nervous system. Let me break it down in three paradigms - Hormonal Response: When we experience stress, the body releases hormones like cortisol and adrenaline as part of the fight-or-flight response. These hormones prepare the body to respond to perceived threats. Even if the memory of the conflict fades, the physiological response to stress can still be stored in the body. Emotional Memory: Emotional memories, particularly those associated with intense or traumatic events, can be stored in various parts of the brain and body. These memories can be triggered by certain cues or reminders, even if we're not consciously aware of them. Somatic Symptoms: Stress and distress from unresolved conflicts can manifest as somatic symptoms, such as muscle tension, headaches, gastrointestinal issues, or fatigue. These physical symptoms may persist even if the conscious memory of the conflict has faded. Hence, while we may consciously forget about past conflicts, the body may still carry the physiological and emotional imprints of those experiences. #therapyworks #mentalhealthservices #mentalhealthsupport #somaticpsychology #bodykeepsthescore #mentalhealthatwork #psychologist #psychologicalwellbeing #mentalhealthadvocacy

When I used to practice clinically, I sometimes get calls asking if I could do hypnosis. I usually asked why and often the answer is to cure some kind of psychological problem believing it to be a powerful method. When I tell people who inquire that hypnosis is an adjunct treatment to evidence based approaches, some people decline to see me because they only want hypnotherapy believing it to be a cure in itself. Well here’s evidence in the form of scientific updates:

Have you ever pulled on a loose thread from a piece of clothing and seen how it starts to undo more than you expected? That’s what healing through self-awareness and breathwork is like. You might start by trying to lower stress, but as you work on it, you notice other things improving—your sleep gets better, you feel more energized, and your mood lifts. As an embodiment coach, I see this all the time. When we start working on the emotional side of chronic pain, it’s like pulling that thread—things like pain, anxiety, and even deeper issues like trauma start to unravel and heal. Hard to believe right... …trauma and chronic pain. I get it, at first glance, you might think these two issues are unrelated. But I put together an articcle on how recent studies show that healing from trauma actually has a profound impact on those who also suffer from pain. Click below to read that article. https://lnkd.in/gd8YAu-b If you are ready to get started on your path to feeling lighter, more free, and in control. You’ll feel the change! BOOK A CALL (On this call we'll get to the root of your back pain and I'll show you a plan to help eliminate that pain for good) Your friend and coach, Kris

🔑 Escaping the Cycle of Emotional Avoidance: The Healing Path Beyond Medication 💊 Why do we suffer? Maybe the suffering is in its avoidance? At the core of most psychological pain is emotional avoidance—the unconscious act of suppressing difficult feelings. We avoid grief, anger, and fear because they are uncomfortable, yet in doing so, we create cycles of suffering. Maybe everything about us is a coping style? Medication, while valuable in many cases, often dulls emotional signals rather than resolves them. It can keep people afloat but rarely encourages them to dive in and process their pain. True healing happens when we stop running from emotions and start feeling them. Healing Involves Feeling 💡 Psychedelic research has shown that psilocybin can help individuals fully experience and process suppressed emotions, leading to long-term relief from depression and anxiety. A recent study from Johns Hopkins found that two psilocybin-assisted therapy sessions reduced depression scores by 71%, with effects lasting over a year! 🔹 Traditional antidepressants often require daily use, whereas psilocybin therapy creates a deep shift in just one or two sessions. 🔹 Rather than numbing emotions, psilocybin brings them to the surface, allowing you to process and release them. 🔹 Unlike many pharmaceuticals, psilocybin is non-addictive and has no withdrawal effects. Integration: The Key to Lasting Change The experience itself is just the beginning. The real work happens in the integration process—when you apply insights to daily life. This means: ✔ Journaling your emotions rather than avoiding them ✔ Practicing mindfulness to recognize avoidance patterns ✔ Seeking therapy or guided support to process deep-seated wounds If you're ready to step out of emotional avoidance and into profound healing, consider a guided, legal psilocybin truffle session. If I told you I had anorexia nervosa, would you believe me? The month of May being mental health month has inspired me to share. You see, Anorexia nervosa is a condition which causes one to be obsessed with their weight. People who have anorexia have distorted self image and go extreme lengths to loose weight. Symptoms include starving, extreme dieting, repeatedly weighing yourself on the scale and almost always feeling like you're overweight when you're not. So obviously those who have the condition are often very slim like me. But, i don't have anorexia nervosa. So why am I this skinny? I don't know! It doesn't bother me, what bothers me; is the fact that people assume I have a problem and even proceed to call me by the condition Yes! I had people call me 'Anorexia nervosa' flat out. I've had teachers question me in public and telling others I have a problem ie. Anorexia. it's the way they go straight to the point for me. People who do this claim it's just a joke, it's out of concern, they are only worried about me and some get annoyed when I clearly ignore them. Yet tell those people to watch their weight when they're clearly going overboard, point out their stomachs and cellulite and watch the world come at you for body shaming or fat shaming even though the world is currently experiencing an obesity pandemic. What makes it right when the roles are reversed? The fact that I'm slim? The fact I don't meet your criteria of a 'proper body weight'? It doesn't bother me but what about others. Let's be kind with our words, let's learn to stop tagging people, let's keep the mental health of others in mind when we choose our words. Now you know what anorexia nervosa really is, it goes beyond physique/ stature. Even if someone has anorexia nervosa, the correct thing to do is to get them help from a certified psychologist/counselor, nutritionist etc. When did we start curing people by calling them by 'their diagnosis' Let's be kind. #nursing #mentalhealthawareness #anorexianervosa #obesitypandemic #pandemic #healtheducation
