The Declaration, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights are based on the idea that all people have certain fundamental rights. Governments are created to protect those rights. The Founders believed that natural rights are inherent in all people by virtue of their being human and that certain of these rights are unalienable, meaning they cannot be surrendered to the government. Despite their similarities and differences, the Declaration, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights are fused together and cannot be separated. This Constitution Week, take time to pass along to future generations the wisdom of our founding documents so that our country will embrace our history and build upon it. https://lnkd.in/gRBPVgwm

Great to have joined Tom Theuns and others in the European Parliament for the launch of his new book ‘Protecting Democracy in Europe’, in which he argues, if we are to succeed, we need to step up our game. Here are some takeaways from his presentation and discussion with László Andor Caroline De Gruyter Samira Rafaela and Anthony Zacharzewski 🔹The EU must address policies making it complicit in democratic backsliding. 🔹 Need to focus less on technocratic legal solutiins, to avoid autocratic populism 🔹Autocratic influences must br contained early. 🔹 Pluralist democracy must be promoted across EU. 🔹Ways to expel autocratic members must be found and used if needed. Well done, and I look forward to reading the book 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

The Civil society vision for the European Democracy Action Plan in 2020 also says: "Although Art. 11 (1) TEU provides a legislative framework for citizens’ involvement in the decision-making process, existing forms for citizen participation in the EU have proven ineffective in bridging the democratic deficit for several reasons. The online EU public consultations of the European Commission are highly technical and mainly used by organised interests. They are not user-friendly and accessible to the public and there is a general lack of awareness among citizens that this tool exists as a form of e-participation. Minimum standards of consultations are binding only for the European Commission in the policy-making process." So, it's there in theory. The "citizens’ involvement in the decision-making process", within our European Union. But it's not there, really.

For a potential article: Who are some thoughtful, fair commentators on 1) the pro-Israel 2) the pro-Palestine sides of the conflict? (Feel free to DM if concerned it will be seen as "getting political" to talk about this.) Thanks!
