Vice President Ma'ruf Amin of Indonesia recently visited the Sermayam Sugar Cane Plantation in Merauke Regency, South Papua, to evaluate the progress of a pilot project aimed at establishing the region as a hub for the sugar industry. This initiative is critical as Indonesia's dependence on imported sugar has been growing, with imports reaching an estimated 6 million tons in 2023. Indonesia is Top 10 largest sugar importer in the world. Vice President Amin expressed his support for the project, highlighting the goal of achieving self-sufficiency in sugar production. He emphasized the importance of developing sugar cane plantations in Merauke to attain a sugar content above 11 percent, akin to the standards in Australia. The development of Merauke as a center for agriculture and plantations is seen as a strategic move to reduce reliance on imports and to meet the increasing domestic demand. This morning, I addressed the Dewan Negara regarding issues related to promoting cocoa cultivation. By 2030, the Ministry aims to increase the total cocoa cultivation area to 10,000 hectares, up from the current 5,985 hectares, to reduce reliance on imported raw cocoa materials. The main initiatives include: 1. The Cocoa Yield Enhancement Program (RPHK), aimed at increasing the new cocoa cultivation area for smallholders from 2021 to 2025, with a 12th Malaysia Plan allocation of RM21 million, targeting 550 hectares of cultivated land. 2. The Cocoa Cultivation Promotion Program for the Plantation Sector, aimed at expanding cocoa planting through new plantation sector involvement, targeting 800 hectares by 2029. Participating companies include Parmaju Industries Berhad, Sabah Land Development Board, Malaysian Kuwaiti Investment Corporation, United Malacca Berhad, Kuala Perak Estate, and MKT Group. 3. Rehabilitation of abandoned cocoa farms, covering 2,850 hectares nationwide through contract-based management. #mycommodity
