In a recent conversation, Dr. Ann McKee, a prominent neurologist and director of Boston University’s CTE and Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centres, addressed the pressing issue of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and its implications for young athletes. Dr. McKee provided insights into the nature of CTE, detailing its symptoms and the mechanisms by which it develops in the brains of individuals subjected to repeated head trauma. The discussion underscored the heightened vulnerability of young athletes to this debilitating condition, with real-life cases illustrating the profound impact CTE can have. The conversation also touched on the NFL's response to CTE awareness and research, examining the league's initial reactions and the ongoing legal challenges surrounding the disease. Moreover, Dr. McKee highlighted the emotional and psychological ramifications of CTE on affected families, emphasizing the critical need for increased awareness and support systems. In closing, she offered practical advice for parents of young athletes, stressing the importance of prioritizing brain health and implementing preventative measures to mitigate the risks associated with CTE and related diseases. This discussion serves as a crucial reminder of the need for ongoing dialogue and action regarding athlete safety in contact sports. #CTE #AthleteSafety #Neurology #BrainHealth #SportsMedicine ---------------------- Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eVn_s-Z4

March is #EssentialTremorAwarenessMonth. According to the The National Institutes of Health Library of Medicine (NLM), #tremors are the most common movement disorder, and essential tremor is the most common neurologic cause of postural or action #tremor. Also, according to the NLM, functional disability in essential tremor is associated with the amplitude of kinetic tremor in the upper limbs. Did you know over 60 million people across the globe live with #essentialtremor? Dr. Arif Dalvi, a neurologist and Director of the Comprehensive Movement Disorders Center at the Palm Beach Neuroscience Institute (PBNI) and Physician Chief of the Movement Disorders Program at Delray Medical Center, provides care for essential tremor, #parkinsonsdisease, #alzheimersdisease, #migraines and other #neurologicaldisorders. Neurological conditions, the primary cause of illness and disability globally, affects more than one in three individuals. A major new study released by The Lancet Neurology shows that, in 2021, more than 3 billion people worldwide were living with a neurological condition. The World Health Organization (WHO) contributed to the analysis of the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factor Study (GBD) 2021 data. Neurological conditions are now the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. The overall amount of disability, illness, and premature death (known as disability-adjusted life years, DALYs) caused by neurological conditions has increased by 18% since 1990. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, World Health Organization Director-General, urges immediate action to address the impact of neurological conditions: "Neurological conditions cause immense suffering, deplete human capital, and demand urgent intervention. We must scale up targeted efforts to ensure individuals receive quality care, treatment, and rehabilitation. Understanding and safeguarding brain health, from early childhood to later life, is paramount." Fascinating and factual,….
"An extremely detailed neurologic exam was again reassuring in that there were no findings which would be consistent with any cerebellar or other central neurological disorder, such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's or ascending lateral sclerosis, nor are there any signs of cervical myelopathy," his report states. This is science folks. At one time I thought my mom had dementia. Turned out she took too many over the counter calciums. She wound up in the hospital. And it showed on her brain imaging the overdose of calcium effected her cognition….temporarily. When taking care of the elderly you cannot jump to conclusions. A bad UTI will have them hallucinating. It’s hard to make a judgment unless you are the doctor. Biden is fine. His neurologist says so. His doctor too. Stop the armchair diagnosing. Stop labeling old people “mentally gone” when they have medical issues. And…. #voteblue for common sense and truth.
