## Advocating for Refugees at the Kenya Model UN I recently had the opportunity to participate in the 24th Session of the Kenya Model United Nations Refugee Competition. This event brought together passionate individuals from across the country to discuss pressing issues facing refugees and advocate for their rights. The global refugee crisis continues to escalate, with millions of people displaced by conflict, persecution, and the devastating impacts of climate change. Now, more than ever, there is a critical need to address the root causes of displacement, protect the rights of refugees, and provide sustainable support to host communities. By fostering dialogue, building partnerships, and empowering youth to become agents of change, we can work towards a more just and equitable future for all. https://lnkd.in/dxaX3iyM

What if the most effective solutions to refugee crises came from the refugees themselves? #Refugee-led organizations have the unique advantage of being part of the communities they serve, and we've learned their expertise runs even deeper. ➡ Refugee responses, including policies and programs, are more effective when informed by refugees' real needs and lived experiences. ➡ Refugee leaders are doing some of the most effective work on the front lines of crises. ➡ Refugee voices are crucial for sustainable solutions and integration into host communities. Without them, we risk continuing short-sighted responses that only address immediate needs. On World Refugee Day, a reminder that refugee women-led organisations are at the frontline of GBV prevention and response. RWLOs describe how they are often the first responders to humanitarian crises and displacement, providing lifesaving GBV services and support alongside other interventions that tackle the underlying drivers of inequality, often with limited or no funding. Excited to share insights from the Global Refugee Forum 2023! We witnessed a groundbreaking moment as over 328 forcibly displaced and stateless persons, representing 8% of attendees, joined the conversation. Their participation isn't just a number—it's a testament to the power of inclusive dialogue in shaping humanitarian responses. The formation of the Coalition on Meaningful Refugee Participation and efforts to integrate displaced voices in policy-making are paving the way for a future where solutions are not just about refugees but also by them. Yet, as we celebrate these achievements, we're also reminded of the hurdles—visa issues, language barriers, and more—that we must overcome together. Looking ahead to the High-Level Officials Meeting in 2025, let's use the momentum from the GRF 2023 as a catalyst for change. Here's to breaking barriers, embracing diverse voices, and building a more inclusive humanitarian community. Internally displaced people and refugees face threats of rent hikes, evictions, and renewed displacement, compromising their safety and dignity. Access to land and housing is essential for survival and rebuilding lives. Housing, Land, and Property (HLP) rights are critical for humanitarian efforts, linking protection and recovery while addressing root causes. This brief highlights the importance of housing land and property rights in emergency and transitional contexts, with examples from Palestine-Gaza, Somalia, and Colombia, and underscores the need for consistent housing land and property rights protection throughout all displacement phases. It draws from a session by the Norwegian Refugee Council for the 2024 World Bank Land Conference. #displacement #IDP #humanitarian #humanitarianaid https://lnkd.in/dhUnGzJ2

On this #WorldRefugeeDay let us remember that people #forcedtoflee want and deserve a normal life just like you and me. In the absence of opportunities to return home in safety and dignity, this means their inclusion in society, public services, and access to decent work. #Refugees and internally displaced persons have a lot to contribute to hosting communities and countries. In low- and middle-income countries, development co-operation has an important role to play. Today is #WorldRefugeeDay. We face a forced displacement crisis of historic proportions, creating challenges not only for the refugees but also for their host countries. By the end of 2023, 117.3 million people were displaced, with 75% hosted in low-and middle-income countries — @UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. As millions continue to grapple with conflict, poverty and the repercussions of climate change, it is imperative that we continue to advocate for their economic and social inclusion.
