For over 125 years, SATS member Taylor Shellfish Farms has been a family-owned business farming shellfish—including oysters, clams, mussels, and geoducks—in the Pacific Northwest. The company prioritizes sustainable #aquaculture practices to minimize environmental impact, using recycled water systems to reduce water usage and protect resources. They also employ natural predators to manage pests, reducing the need for harmful chemicals. Many Welsh farmers are relieved that the government has listened to concerns about the Sustainable Farming Scheme's perceived "one size fits all" tree planting targets. But it's reassuring that the Welsh Government has continued its commitment to encouraging farms to manage 10% of the farm as wildlife habitat. Woodland is not the only valuable ecological asset, and we respect Rhys Evans of the Nature Friendly Farming Network speaking up for the target, and the value of regenerated peatland, hedgerows, and ponds on his farm, alongside tree planting. As NFFN Chair Martin Lines says, intelligently planned nature-friendly farming has driven an 18% yield boost on his farm. 🚜🌾Sustainable farming practices explored with Fermanagh Farmers 🌾🚜 A workshop in Boho, Co. Fermanagh, focused on regenerative farming and soil health, was organised by Queen's University Belfast and Ulster Wildlife. Expert Niels Corfield led discussions on sustainable practices such as adaptive grazing, extending grazing seasons, and improving soil health through techniques like subsoiling and gypsum application. The hands-on session included soil compaction and percolation tests, which revealed the impacts of grazing on soil structure. Attendees left with valuable insights to improve farm resilience and productivity.
