The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) recently released its 2009-2019 Status and Trends of Wetlands report which shows significant declines in wetland habitat quality and size across the conterminous U.S. Salt marsh experienced the largest net percent reduction of any wetland category (2% or -70K acres). It's estimated the current global cost of carbon dioxide emissions associated with mangrove, salt marsh, and seagrass loss is between $6.1 and $42B annually. However, there are key actions we can take to slow and stop the decline of wetlands—including improved collaboration between government and non-government partners, further commitments to long-term conservation and management, and new and improved conservation methods. The 6th decadal report by the US Fish and Wildlife Service on the status and trends of wetlands in the US is out, and from 2009-2019 we lost 221,000 acres of wetlands. This is a 50% increase in loss compared to the previous decade. So, our efforts to conserve and restore wetlands need to be redoubled. https://lnkd.in/ge9-JPA2

It's fantastic to see that single-use vapes will be banned in England and Wales in June next year, following the Scottish ban coming into force on 1 April 2025. Unpublished data from The Diffley Partnership has found that 55% of those surveyed in Scotland report that sightings of single-use vapes have become common in the past 12 months. In 2023 we reported that 44% of people reported seeing single-use vapes as litter often – the fastest growing observation of all types of litter. While we welcome the news of this upcoming ban of these unnecessary contributors to our litter emergency, there are still months to go and we encourage everyone using these products to bin them responsibly.
