Funding award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for commercializing breakthrough CO2 to ethylene technology 🧪 The Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations | U.S. Department of Energy has authorized the initiation of Phase 1 of the Sustainable Ethylene from CO2 Utilization with Renewable Energy Project (Project SECURE) and committed up to $200 million in federal funding throughout the project duration. We lead Project SECURE in partnership with LanzaTech and during this initial phase of the project, along with LanzaTech, we will conduct a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study, developing project plans, providing documentation and reports necessary to complete the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review. SunHydrogen, Inc. (OTCQB: HYSR), the developer of a breakthrough technology to produce renewable hydrogen using sunlight and water, today announced it has completed a demonstration of its green hydrogen technology at the commercially-relevant 1m² scale.

NEWS: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations has announced that LanzaTech and our partner Technip Energies have been selected to receive up to a $200 million award to support our Project SECURE, which will capture CO2 emissions from traditional ethylene crackers and transform them into sustainable ethylene production facilities. Traditional ethylene production is one of the largest sources of emissions across the chemical industry, generating 553 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, and remains one of the most challenging processes to decarbonize. Our integrated solution has significant replication potential for ethylene crackers worldwide, meaning we have an opportunity to sustainably meet the global demand for ethylene while reducing global carbon emissions. The ethylene market is expected to be worth $200 billion by 2030, with annual global demand of more than 231 million tons. Ethylene is often called the “world most important chemical” due to its widespread use in critical industries. It is a building block for thousands of chemicals and materials, including plastics, detergents, and coatings for medical purposes and food packaging. Ethylene is also the first intermediate in producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from ethanol in LanzaJet’s Alcohol-to-Jet process, so this commercial demonstration is a critical step in scaling the production of SAF from CO2. This funding will accelerate the expansion of our commercial-scale carbon recycling technology in the U.S., and is a major milestone on our journey to create a circular carbon economy. Over the past three years, HyScaling has collaborated with 29 innovative companies, SMEs, universities, and CROs to drive manufacturing innovation on technology development and integration. Realistic use cases, such as hydrogen for steelmaking, solar-powered hydrogen production in Portugal, and electrolysis for grid-balancing, have guided the HyScaling project, ensuring focus on real business applications. One key project of this initiative involves the supply of hydrogen produced in Dow’s cracking plants. This July 2024, B.C. Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy (CICE) is launching a call for innovation focused on advancing the development, commercialization and adoption of breakthrough solutions for industry decarbonization. CICE will award up to $10 million non-dilutive investment to innovators aligned with the following priority areas: - Low Carbon Hydrogen: Utilizing solid carbon from methane pyrolysis and using low carbon hydrogen to decarbonize industrial sectors in B.C.  - Battery Technologies and Energy Storage: Enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of battery and energy storage systems and decarbonizing industrial and transportation sectors. - Low Carbon Bio and Synthetic Fuels: Scaling second-generation biofuels through the diversification of feedstocks such as agricultural and forest residues. Clean #hydrogen is widely acknowledged as the key solution to reduce carbon emissions in challenging sectors such as steel production, the chemical industry, long-haul truck transportation, and as a feedstock for PtL fuels for aviation and shipping. However, the reality is that only a small number of projects actually reach the final investment decision and even less are operational. This results in a substantial gap between globally announced production projects (840 GW) and the actual realization of projects, currently standing at below 1 GW. These are some of the key findings from our new Strategy& Study, elaborated by Dirk Niemeier, Daniel Haag, Marie Hufen and myself which we presented today at the World Energy Congress in Rotterdam, organized by World Energy Council.
