In 2023, the inaugural UCI Cycling World Championships were staged in Glasgow and across Scotland (United Kingdom). It was the first time that 13 individual UCI World Championships were brought together in a single event. Yesterday an independent socio-economic report on the impact of this inaugural UCI Cycling World Championships conducted by EY was published. I am very proud and privileged to have had the opportunity to play a part alongside a group of very talented management, events, marketing and commercial professionals that delivered this historic event which brought about significant socio-economic benefits for Glasgow, Scotland and the UK. Key highlights for me from this socio-economic report are : 💰 A £205 million boost for the local economy 🚲 Inspiring 79% of residents to cycle more ❤️ 95% of residents proud to host the event. 👏 93% of stakeholders intend to continue activities that they started in relation to the Championships. ♻ 85% of stakeholders felt the Championships were delivered in an environmentally responsible way. 🚴♀️ & 🚶♂️ 82% of visitors used a form of active travel during the 2023 UCI Cycling Worlds. One of the most impactful books that I have read in my life is Atomic Habits by James Clear. If you haven't read it, I would highly recommend. I still remember the first time that I read the book while in college. I was knocking doors to sell alarm systems in the summer in order to pay for college. I was encouraged by one of my leaders, Casey Baugh, to read this book. In our most recent company meeting, we dove deep into some of the concepts from this book. A few key takeaways that I have loved: - We should be far more concerned with our current trajectory and where we are headed than with our current results. - Success is the product of our daily habits rather than one-off, massive transformations. - You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. - The anticipation of a reward is more powerful than the actual reward itself.
In our recent all-hands team meeting, we discussed key themes from one of our favorite books, Atomic Habits by James Clear. In his book, Clear shares the incredible story of the British National Cycling Team and how they went from being one of the worst teams in the rankings, to dominating the world championships. To reach their goal of becoming the best, they made every effort—big and small—to get 1% better every day. From choosing the most comfortable bike seat, to getting the best mattress for sleeping, down to painting the inside of their vans white so that they could keep their equipment immaculate, the team left no detail untouched so they could get better, bit by bit, at their craft. In the end, the team won 178 world championships, 66 Olympic and Paralympic goal medals, and five Tour de France victories over a span of only 10 years. This dedication made them one of the most successful cycling teams in history. Our HM team often talks about the concept of how getting 1% better each and everyday compounds to improving by 37x over one year—a similar concept to what the British cycling team did. #JamesClear #AtomicHabits #TeamMeeting

Ever heard of "Atomic Habits" by James Clear? This isn't just a book; it's a blueprint we live by at Hughes Marino. At our latest team meeting, we delved deep into the principle of improving 1% better every day. Why? Because small enhancements by each team member can eventually lead to massive gains collectively. This philosophy isn’t just theory; it's woven into the very fabric of our daily work. Every single day, we’re committed to being the best resource for our communities and clients. If you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend it. Embrace the compound power of incremental gains! #JamesClear #AtomicHabits #TeamMeeting #ContinuousImprovement #ProfessionalGrowth

Stupid moves, real winners horrendous weather, great comebacks, disappointments and a terrible tragedy… That's how we can sum-up this Men's and Women's Road Racing World Championship races in Zurich. 🚲 Stupid moves: Tadej Pogacar, without thinking too much, attacks with 100 kms to go. "It was as stupid move", he said at the finish line, which he crossed first. Tadej is the King of Stupid Moves. 🚲 Real winners: Yes, Pogi won the WC. Not surprising. But for me the real winners are Ben O'Connor, who came second after a brilliant Vuelta, and Van der Poel, who outrode Evenpoel on a parcour that was out of his comfort zone. 🚲 Horrendous weather: the weather during the women's race was so bad, I think that all the riders that made it to the finish line are winners. Period. 🚲 Great comebacks: Lotte Kopecky wasn't doing all that well during the race and was, apparently struggling. In the end, she came back and with a bang, winning back-to-back World Championships. 🚲 You can't write about this year's race without mentioning the terrible tragedy that happened during the women's race. Our thoughts go to the family and friends of Muriel Furrer who crashed and died during the race in circumstances so far unclear. ❓What was your favourite moment of this years World Championships?❓ Endurance Translations – multilingual translation agency for cycling, running, swimming and triathlon brands. For fun, I recently updated the data on the French "#TourDeFrance" cycling history to analyze how champions have improved their performance from 1919 to 2023. It's fascinating to see that the difference in pace between the winner and the median of all riders is only 1.8 km/h. Even more striking is the 2.8 km/h difference between the first and last rider. Considering the Tour de France spans over 3,000 km, the time difference translates to several hours. However, when you reflect on the speeds and paces achieved by all participants, it’s clear they are all elite athletes. https://lnkd.in/e5EbXVZN
