Raccoons are more than just cute critters you might spot rummaging through your trash cans! Here are some interesting facts about raccoons that you might not know... 👇 🌟 Highly Intelligent: Raccoons are incredibly smart. Studies have shown that they have problem-solving skills comparable to those of primates. They can remember solutions to tasks for at least three years! 🌟 Omnivorous Diet: Raccoons are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. Their diet includes fruits, nuts, insects, small mammals, and even fish. They are also known for scavenging human food. 🌟 Dexterous Paws: Raccoons have highly dexterous front paws, which they use to manipulate objects and open containers. Their paws are so sensitive that they can feel and identify objects underwater by touch alone. 🌟 Masked Bandits: The distinctive black "mask" around their eyes isn't just for show. It helps reduce glare and enhance their night vision, making them excellent nocturnal foragers. 🌟 Excellent Climbers and Swimmers: Raccoons are skilled climbers and can easily scale trees and buildings. They are also strong swimmers, able to cross rivers and lakes in search of food. Day 6: Find something on the beach that you are unsure about and try and learn a fact about it. We were on the beach and was collecting some Common Prawns and Mysis Shrimp for the zoo for enriching entertaining food for our animals and we came across a strange little flattened being with jerking legs or it could've been hair from my perspective. I thought it was a flatworm but I soon found out that it wasn't under a microscope (which is what is pictured). Other staff here identified it as a ragworm or to be more precise a chopped up segment of a ragworm, which is still alive. So my fact about a ragworm, which is essentially a burrowing underwater millipede, if it is indeed a ragworm is as follows: "As a Polychaete, ragworms can survive being separated into pieces as they have the ability to regenerate different segments of themselves. The replacement of the tail when amputated is the most common. They can also survive on fewer parts than they previously had making them in theory ageless but in reality this is not true as they die after reproducing at around three years of age" I know I'm breaking my own rules here but here's another fact about Ragworms too if it is indeed a ragworm: "Each Segment of a ragworm has a pair of parapods, or swimming legs (not jerking legs as I referred to them as), and each of them has bristles. There are loads of parapods" #30dayswild #polychaetes #bristles #ragworm

While skunks are known for their distinct odor, they also play an essential role in the ecosystem. 🦨🌿 If you happen to come in contact with a skunk during your walk, here's what to do to ensure a safe and odor-free outcome.. 👇 ✨ Keep Your Distance: As soon as you spot a skunk, slow down and maintain a safe distance. Skunks have limited eyesight but a keen sense of smell. Give them space and avoid startling them. ✨ Stay Calm: It's natural to feel a bit startled, but remaining calm is key. Sudden movements or loud noises might make the skunk feel threatened, increasing the likelihood of it spraying. ✨ Move Slowly and Gently: If you need to move away from the skunk, do so slowly and smoothly. Sudden movements could alarm the skunk and prompt defensive actions. ✨ Don't Approach: As curious as you might be, avoid approaching the skunk. Even though they're generally peaceful creatures, it's best to admire them from a distance. ✨ Avoid Eye Contact: In the animal kingdom, prolonged eye contact can be interpreted as a challenge or threat. Avoid staring directly at the skunk and instead maintain a relaxed gaze. ✨ Back Away Slowly! #furbusters #mchenrycountyil #lakecountyil #southernwisconsin #wildliferemoval

Behavior and Communication Cats communicate through a combination of vocalizations (such as meowing, purring, hissing, and growling), body language, and scent marking. Body language cues, including tail position, ear posture, and facial expressions, convey a cat's mood, intentions, and level of comfort or agitation. Solitary hunters by nature, cats exhibit independent and territorial behavior, but they can also form social bonds with humans and other animals. #dogchasetoy, #watertoysfordogs, #strangerthingsdogtoy, #duckdogtoy, #soccerballdogtoy, #dogballonrope, #lambchopdogbed, #rollercamroperoller, #roperoller, #dogchewtoysforteeth, #dogsgumsbleeding #whenchewingtoy,#goughnutsdogtoys, #dogtoywithnailfile,#floppyfishdogtoy, #refillbottledogtoy, #donutdogtoy, #carrotfarmdogtoy, #llamadogtoy, #toysforherdingdogs, #caterpillardogtoy, #dogtoysforpool #petsafari #petsafarilife #pet #safari #life #pets https://lnkd.in/gatBgyS6

All About Your Cats Whiskers Whiskers are known as vibrissae and tactile hairs they have several functions and are highly sensitive they are thicker than normal hair they are really touch receptors that are rooted more deeply than normal hairs and are rich in nerve endings and feelings. Whiskers have many functions like navigation and are sensitive they aid a cat and can detect changes in air currents they help a cat navigate in dark environment this helps them feel for objects avoiding walking into things also helps them detect prey like mice and birds. Cats can slide through small openings because their whiskers are about the same as the cat’s body width if they can poke their head through then their body should fit, with a fat cat this can be inaccurate. On the muzzle there are four rows of whiskers on each side. The top two rows can move independently from the bottom two rows. Whiskers are the cats eye protection help them when hunting in grass or busy areas they trigger a protective eye blink if there is a branch or some brush that might get in the way. It is normal for a cat to lose whiskers like cat fur feline whiskers continuously grow, fall out and get replaced with new ones all cats possess 12 whiskers on each side for a total of 24 technically called vibrissae the whiskers are very sensitive and can do everything from gauging wind direction detecting movement under extreme low light conditions, helping them focus on their target. Never put your cat at risk by cutting very sensitive whiskers this are to protect the cat and give them balance. You tube: https://lnkd.in/eAycmXzV Do Comment and Follow.

Day 1471: What is so special about sea otters, hidden pockets and use of tools? If you are a fan of sea otters, you may have observed – either in real life or in a nature documentary – how these adorable, furry critters are masters at using tools. Otters are known to use rocks to crack open the shells of their favourite prey, usually invertebrates such as crabs, clams and snails. But where does one find a rock in the middle of the ocean? Does the otter dive down to the seafloor to hunt for a suitable stone whenever it wants to have a meal? As it turns out, nature has a solution for everything; it is said that otters have biological 'pockets' under their fur for storing rocks and food. Is this true? Under each of the sea otter's forearms are folds of baggy skin, which act as built-in pouches for tools such as rocks and any extra food it has gathered. Sea otters have been observed to be incredibly innovative and impressive. One study noted that even stranded juveniles that were reared by humans spontaneously developed a knowledge of stone tool use. Interestingly, otters are also known to be very particular when choosing their rocks, often opting for stones within a specific size range. Different otters may also display varying preferences for rocks of different shapes, textures or weights. It is common for otters to have favourite rocks and even pass these "collections" down to their offspring, much like a family heirloom. These rocks play a significant role in the otter's life beyond serving as a practical mealtime tool – otters have been observed grooming their rocks, self-soothing by rubbing the rocks against their body, as well as juggling and playing with their collections. The exact reasons behind such behaviours are still being studied, with some scientists purporting that frequent interaction with rocks helps otters maintain their dexterity. Other scientists think the animals are just having fun! https://lnkd.in/etQGeb_u #learnonethingaday

Fri 10th May, hopeful. Dog days are generally treacly this year. This one may inspire you to start something new but it’s probably early days. If you know this you won’t be prey to the double-edged sword of the hope that blinds us to facts. Not for anything crucial.
