I love an event where women can chat, network and learn from each other. Even better when there is delicious food, drinks and setting!
I've been to the The In Good. events two or three times before and they're great! It's so great to be surrounded by amazing women.
I was delighted to be invited to be one of the panellists at this month's event. Thank you Nic Sowden and Rachel Hirst for thinking of me.
For me, following their questions, here are a few things that ring true to my career and life experience:
- If you find something that you love that you can turn into a business idea, then go for it if you can!
- I've never felt 100% confident with decisions I make, but I think that is healthy. I don't ever want to be in a place where I don't feel that I have things to learn from others
- As a women, you can feel pitted against others, but Zoe and I work hard to ensure that our workplace nurtures everyone's paths. For team recruitment, the most important pre requisite for us is that you are personable and friendly. All other skills can be taught
- I probably don't do enough self care, but I enjoy the simple things in life: my family, friends, the outdoors, a good pub lunch and occasional hot tub!
- I've heard that it's not a good idea to set up a business with someone else, not least your family, but definitely not your in laws! But Zoe and I work perfectly as Co Founders! Utilising separate skills, sharing the workload and always being there for each other when we need to decompress.
- I couldn't imagine doing anything else but @Zebedee. It's my absolute passion, and without this passion, and the passion of the team and talent, we wouldn't be where we are today, as it still remains ridiculously difficult to get clients to either understand why they should be inclusive, or take the step to be so.
You can watch this clip to find out a little more about why and how we set up Zebedee.

Your work as a social worker and then you know related or want to change the way and and celebrate our disability and visual differences and gender is celebrated in in with your business. Talk to us about your point. Yeah so as I mentioned, kind of I went back to uni I don't know how it was like 28 or something and went to do ship social work and I did that for. Maybe 10 years working with looked after children and then moving into working in the first episode psychosis. And then I went on maternity leave and with my first child. And as often happens you I don't know, but accidents like the business when returned to the evening. Other people seem to do this. But I went to see Zoe, my sister-in-law, and we were taught the dogs a little walk on the beach and we were having a chat about the people that we knew that had disabilities. And the lack of opportunity in the media for them. How if you had a disability you would not find an agent. And if you had a disability you would not find any opportunities to work in fashion, media, TV, film. It just it just was not an option for you. This is only in 2017. There was no representation in 2017. The sats were nought point nought 1, nought point nought nought 1 is that the people featured in advertising had a disability. So pretty much. Nothing. And we just, we had a chat. We were, we were moaning about it, how there was no opportunities. And we've had a light bulb moment. We we decided that if nobody else was out there looking to advocate for people with disabilities and try and get them in front of casting directors and in fashion and in film, then why don't we do it? And literally as we have that light, the moment we absolutely 100% knew we were going to do. Is moving to make it work and and since that date since 2017 we have placed thousands and thousands and I mean we've probably done 10,000 jobs now have 10,000 opportunities for thousands of talent and we work with people with disabilities physical disabilities, learning disabilities, people with no divergence We work with people with physical differences there's scarring alopecia, burns the salido and also. People who are trying to nonbinary and essentially anyone who has historically not been able to get those opportunities and. And since we launched that North Point NN, 1% of people teaching advertising, this starts a bit closer to 4% now. So there's a huge, a huge improvement. Either come yet so. That so 20% of people in the world or perhaps a little bit more habits 13. So there's a huge difference between the reality and what is and who is represented in the media. So we still have a long way to go, but I would say I'm not gonna stop until we get there. So we're still going. We're gonna keep doing it and I'll probably be well, I might be dead happens, but I'll keep trying. Yeah. So this just like if there is a huge business case for it and we bang and bang on about it to our clients, like you will make more money if you're inclusive. But of course there's the ethical case. There's so many people who just haven't had those opportunities and why should they not have these opportunities? Why? How can this happen? And I heard something recently, I heard that. So we all know about DI, we all know diversity of the inclusion. We all need to be doing it. We all need to be thinking about creative industries, all need to be thinking about it. But there's a new, a new term I've heard coin, which is DEI&A. So it's having access accessibility onto that. So you can't for so long disability wasn't even in there, just wasn't considered in the diversity debate. But now I think if you have the DIA for access accessibility, that means you cannot, you can't forget about a huge community. Right.
We all left feeling totally inspired by our panel on that special evening. Your passion, belief, and heart shone so brightly that night. The work and drive you and your fabulous Zebedee family embody is a force to be proud of.

Yesterday was quite a day.
I hosted the latest in our series of events designed to help senior women in marketing get inspiration, tips and advice on how break through the glass ceiling through Director level roles and move into board level positions.
The panel this time saw the return of the lovely Helen Normoyle and she was joined by first time panellists Kate Pennell and Dawn Spencer, who did an amazing job. Thank you!
I not only love these events for the inspiration that it gives me to hear the stories of career success and positive mindset that these women clearly display which explain why they have been so successful, but I have also been really overwhelmed by the feedback that has come from the attendees about how much impact it has had on them and the ideas and positivity that they have taken away from it.
There were two quotes on the day that really resonated with me:
1) "Its not about how well you blend in, its about how boldly you stand out”.
This is something I think that at times I, and other women, have felt about working in a male dominated environment/at a male dominated level. You feel like you need to be the one to adapt to fit in with the ways of working/talking/likes or dislikes of those around you. You don't. Women are different and we should embrace our different feelings, experiences, approaches and opinions to bring change and new ideas to our businesses.
2) "Growth and comfort don’t co-exist" .
Again, a key message that has come out of all of these events that I have hosted has been that as a general rule, women will shy away from taking on promotions or opportunities because we doubt ourselves and think we need to be the finished article in order to be worthy of a bigger role.
It's OK to feel out of your comfort zone by taking on new challenges and responsibilities. You've been given those opportunities because those around you believe you can do it. Believe in yourself and lean into the discomfort.
There will be more LinkedIn posts in the coming days with a synopsis of the event content, some videos from the speakers and also news about the new What's App group I launched at the event for senior women in marketing!
Happy bank holiday weekend everyone!

Can we talk about humble brags for a sec?
Whether you’re truly feeling humbled or have a solid reason to brag, it all can feel … odd. Personally, receiving public praise feels more awkward to me than it is validating – my default is to shine light elsewhere.
That said, I can brag all day long about the people I get to work beside. And fittingly, PRNEWS is recognizing our team for In-house innovation. https://lnkd.in/ggaySSQM
I’m honored to be named among PRNEWS Top Women in PR for In-House Innovation, which is far more about the “we” than me. We’ve come a long way in building Advantage Solutions’ first enterprise corp comms and marketing team in less than 12 months … and here’s what we agreed way back then 😇:
-We’d make stuff, break stuff and lift each other up along the way
-We’d reimagine storytelling as something we lived and proved in how others experience us – with authenticity
-We’d create new connections and listen with intention to better reflect lived truths and new possibilities
-We’d enjoy the journey and commit to enriching lives

You know what I want in life, it sounds so simple, but why is it so hard? I just want everyone to feel happyiness, peace, to enjoy life and feel equal in this world- so that we all have the opportunity to follow what ever our dreams might be.
Ok I know life’s not that simple, but as humans we have so much more influence than we realise. WE employ our governments, WE choose which corporations to spend our money with.. WE can choose to do better for our fellow humans.
This is way I was thrilled to share with Jack Belcher, the Speaker Liaison at Mash Media at International Confex the story behind starting Diversity Alliance ® (catch it on their latest episode of Conference Calls).
Because ultimately, it was for that very reason — I wanted to see people happy, living a fulfilled life and being treated equally and respectfully in our industry, at our events and for that to ripple into the world around us.
I believe we're at a crisis point when it comes to DE&I. Until we truly focus on improving representation and creating genuinely inclusive workplace cultures, marginalised people will continue to be significantly impacted day after day. It's critical that we address these issues head-on to create meaningful change.
And if you want to know more about:
👉 What the industry can do today to work towards DE&I
👉 Why we were the content partners for DE&I this year
👉 Our future goals for Diversity Alliance

After a wonderful race weekend and in the midst of post-race responsibilities, I’m grateful that Susan Sears created a “pause” for us and invited me to join her for The Power of She event hosted by the Gravity Center, LLC.
Being in a room of women leaders and hearing from some amazing women during the program, I felt rejuvenated and was given some great learnings/reminders.
Here are just a few of the takeaways from the discussions and maybe you’ll find a nugget from them. My way of bringing people to the table (post event) and you’ll get that if you read below.
1. Listen. Pause and listen to others. You can learn a lot by listening. Plus, sometimes the other person just needs someone to listen.
2. Being intentional is important. That’s something I’ve always strived for in all my relationships- personal and professional. But a great reminder as it has felt harder to do in balancing motherhood, friendships, career, being a wife, etc. which leads to another.
3. I loved how Molly Grantham changed the perspective from balance to juggling. Juggling gives you control to choose which balls to pick up and which to drop. And maybe dropping a ball is needed for the season you’re in and you can pick it back up later. I needed that reminder because I’ll admit I’ve been trying to juggle too many or feeling guilty dropping a ball or two (or 10).
4. This one was beautiful and one I feel I struggle with because often I’m not sure I’m skilled enough, connected enough, or confident enough. And I’ll be the first to admit, that build up to networking or meeting someone new is terrifying to me. Funny because once I connect I can instantly dig deep and get to know someone. But all that to say, a panelist shared, “Don’t just be in the spaces. Create the spaces. Ask who you should bring into the space that would not be there? Bring them.” I’m not only going to challenge myself to bring people in, but to ask for a seat at the table.
It was a powerful event with great reminders and learnings. I’ve already written some of these reminders on sticky notes around my office to stay top of mind and act on.
