We are officially 5 days from Walk Day, and we still need your help to hit our goal and help END Alzheimer's!! More than 6.7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease. It is the 5th leading cause of death for individuals over 65. Half of primary care physicians believe the medical profession is not prepared for the growing number of people with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. ⅔ of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women. By 2050, it is expected that a total of almost 13 million Americans will be living with Alzheimer's. The amount of people affected by this disease, aside from those who have it, is too great of a number to even try to guess. Sigma Kappa fights to end Alzheimer's every day and prides itself on being the first sorority to recognize the need for a more comprehensive study on aging and memory in the elderly community. Our mission is to bring awareness to the disease and raise money to find a cure. Alzheimer's is the ONLY disease in the top 10 leading causes of death in the United States that is unable to be cured, prevented, or slowed down. Many people suffer directly from this disease, and many more struggle seeing their loved ones go through this terrible disease. Sigma Kappa is proud to have been the second largest national team last year, bringing in almost 1.5 MILLION dollars to the cause. With quite an ambitious fundraising goal, Sigma Kappa, Kappa Pi at Clemson University is asking for your support in fighting Alzheimer's. We pride ourselves on being one of the Top 3 fundraising teams for Sigma Kappa, and top 30 in the nation. We hope to continue to raise even more awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support, and research. Please consider donating below, as this is a disease that everyone needs cured. The Hardest and Most Fulfilling Job: Caring for My Mom Last year, my life changed forever when my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Taking care of her has been the hardest and most fulfilling job I’ve ever had. Every day brings new challenges, but also moments of profound new discovery of patience, grace and compassion. Alzheimer’s and elder care are areas that desperately need more support from our healthcare system and benefits from companies. Alzheimer's doesn't just affect the individual diagnosed - it impacts entire families and communities. The emotional, physical, and financial toll on families is immense, and yet, resources and assistance are often limited. We need to do better for our loved ones and for the caregivers who support them.  By coming together, we can work towards better support systems, improved care options, and ultimately, a cure. On September 28th, I will be participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. This event is free to join, and they simply ask for donations to help fund research and support services. If this cause speaks to your heart, I would be incredibly grateful for any donation, even $5, to help fund research and find a cure for this devastating disease. This year, I am participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s with my team at ShadowBox LLC. The Alzheimer's Association® is doing incredible work, and we have the opportunity to be part of it. Alzheimer’s is a cause that’s especially close to my heart as someone who works in cognitive science for two main reasons: 1. It impacts how people think: In my work and in my studies, I constantly think about the way that people think and make decisions. People's ability to deliberate, solve complex problems, create, and work together is truly incredible. Alzheimer’s is a disease that takes away the cognitive gifts that we all take for granted. 2. It's research history: In the mid-2000s, Alzheimer’s research was affected by a scandal involving falsified data in a landmark study. The gravity of the negative impact is debated, but it is important to support robust research moving forward to develop more effective treatments in the future.
