💣 ❓The world is facing a crossroads: Climate catastrophe, proliferation of armed conflict, rise of AI, et al. Is our well-aged global, multilateral order up for the task? 🌐 This Sunday, 193 UN member states agreed on the 🔭 #Pact_for_the_Future, including the 💻 #Global_Digital_Compact and a 👨👩👧👦 #Declaration_on_Future_Generations - the most ambitious and wide-ranging international agreement in many years. 📜 ✅ 🎊 💡 SO WHAT? A few thoughts & observations: 💯THE UN NEED REFORM | UN Secretary-General António Guterres aptly and blatantly put it: “we cannot create a future fit for our grandchildren with a system built by our grandparents.” 📉 SDGs NEED REVITALISATION | ~10y after the world came together and set itself the aspirational & ambitious #SustainableDevelopmentGoals - just 5y until before deadline - progress has been slow and success increasingly unlikely. This agreement might re-energize and re-focus collective determination and action: by nation states, international institutions and, crucially, global civil society & communities! 📈 🤝 🔗 INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IS (STILL) POSSIBLE | Russia tried to torpedo it - but failed. Instead, the unlikely ambitious pact is the culmination of an inclusive, years-long process "to adapt international cooperation to the realities of today and the challenges of tomorrow." It covers entirely new areas (#AI) & issues on which agreement has not been possible in decades. It is a strong statement that countries’ are still commitment to the UN, the international system and international law. 👨💻 👨🌾 👨🔧 INCLUSIVE, COMMUNITY-DRIVEN GOVERNANCE WORKS | Both Summit process & Pact have been enriched by contributions of millions of +7000 voices & stakeholders (Heads of State, IGOs, NGOs, UN System, civil society) from around the world. 🎥 A short video of insights & impressions: https://lnkd.in/eDwvEVUc 📑 Overview of results: https://lnkd.in/exniceGG 🔎 The final agreement: https://lnkd.in/eHdbbM8n 🙏 Thanks to the Stiftung Mercator GmbH and the Mercator Kolleg für internationale Aufgaben, and particularly Teresa Spancken and Katharina Seibel, for allowing me and a group of dedicated and brilliant nefia e.V. fellows to participate at the #SummitoftheFuture and the #UNActionDays. #UNGA #GlobalDigitalCompact #OurCommonFuture.

🎂 Today marks the 79th anniversary of the United Nations Charter’s entry into force. The Charter calls for the United Nations to maintain international peace and security, promote social progress and better standards of life, strengthen international law and promote human rights —challenges no country can tackle alone. Since 1945, its influence has extended beyond diplomacy. In 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by all United Nations Member States, offering a framework for actionable change through the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals (SDGs). By providing a shared language for addressing systemic issues, adaptable to local realities while tracking global impact, #SDG ’s are a powerful framework to ensure a just, equitable, and sustainable world where no one is left behind. Yet, as we look towards the SDGs 2030 milestone, we must confront the reality: setbacks from the COVID-19 pandemic, climate disruptions, armed conflicts and deepening inequalities have setback many of the targets. The question is no longer whether we will reach the targets, but how - amid multiple global challenges - we can intensify our efforts, adapt strategies, and strengthen our collective innovative resolve in the years we have left to maintain a livable planet for all. In order to evaluate your contributions and keep your actions aligned with the broader 2030 vision, explore tools like: 👉 the SDG Action Manager : https://lnkd.in/dwBRuVH 👉 the UN Global Compact’s resources: https://lnkd.in/gzMeYwpJ #anniversary #UNDay #UNcharter #Sustainability #globalcooperation

On 22-23 September, world leaders will gather in New York for the much-anticipated #SummitoftheFuture. At a time when effective global cooperation is increasingly critical for our survival, achieving it remains a challenge fueled by mistrust and outdated structures that no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities. The Summit’s main outcome will be an inter-governmental agreement – the Pact for the Future – featuring two annexes: a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations. In this piece for Friends of Europe, United Nations/UNDP Director in Brussels Camilla Brückner, outlines what makes the Pact for the Future transformative and #EU's role in moving the world towards a more inclusive, sustainable and fair global order. #UNGA European Commission

The outcome of the United Nations Summit of the Future that concluded earlier this week is summarized in an invigorating 🌏 “Pact for the Future” 🤝 agreement - https://lnkd.in/eis796DX Why is it 🙌 invigorating? There are a number of points, but mainly because of two things: 1. It contains areas and issues on which agreements were not possible for decades and, equally important, 2. it also aims to “adapt international cooperation to the realities of today and the challenges of tomorrow” as well “to ensure that international institutions can deliver in the face of a world that has changed dramatically since they were created”. A couple of statements that stand out to DrivingWhatMatters4ESG (DWM4ESG): 1. On sustainable development, climate and financing for development: “The entire Pact is designed to turbo-charge implementation of the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals.” 2. Overall: “We cannot create a future fit for our grandchildren with a system built by our grandparents.” (António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General) As we continue to work to highlight Solutions that help accelerating one or several of the 17 #UNSDG, this Pact resonates strongly at DWM4ESG. We look forward to the advancement of its implementation to help strengthen needed Actions for a prosperous future for People & Planet – together we can! Be positive 😃 - Be part of the 🌍 Solutions 💚!
The adoption of a major new international agreement at the Summit of the Future, which concluded Monday at the United Nations, is an important step forward in strengthening global cooperation. The Pact for the Future will help countries work more closely together as they seek to address some of the biggest challenges facing humanity and #OurCommonFuture. We have unlocked the door,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres, urging: “Now it is our common responsibility to walk through it.” https://bit.ly/SotF2024

This is a dangerous system. Possible risks include damaging winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, rough seas, mudslides, and flash flooding. Kirk continues to have a tight inner core, with deep convection wrapping around the center. The eye has continued to become more cloud filled, as shear increases over the system. The latest subjective and objective satellite intensity estimates have held mostly steady with this cycle, and the initial intensity is held at 120 mph (105 knots). Kirk continues to move northward and increase forward speed with an estimated motion of (005/17 knots) between a trough located over the west-central Atlantic and a subtropical ridge in the east Atlantic. Model track guidance remains tightly clustered, although there has been a slight shift southward as the system transitions and becomes post-tropical. The NHC forecast track shows the center of Kirk passing just to the north of the Azores on Monday as an extratropical cyclone, and then moving across the northeastern Atlantic and over western Europe by the middle of next week. The official NHC track forecast is very similar to the previous advisory, with a slight nudge southward towards the end of the period following the consensus model trends. Wind shear has started to increase over Kirk this afternoon (5 October), but the inner core has been able to remain intact. However, the environment will only continue to become more hostile as wind shear continues to increase, with drier mid-level air, and cooler sea surface temperatures. Therefore, steady weakening is forecast through early next week. The system should lose tropical characteristics and transition to a strong extratropical cyclone around 60 hours. The updated NHC intensity forecast is near the previous one in the near term, with a slightly faster rate of weakening in agreement with the latest HCCA and simple consensus aids. Forecaster Kelly. Advisory Number 26. Information provided by the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
