Excited to share our new paper! We conducted a new thermodymics-based analysis of diffusive transport in geologic systems with multiple partially-soluble fluids, focusing on the important cases of CO2 and H2. We show that in the presence of a geothermal gradient, entropic contributions can reverse the direction of diffusion! This was completely counter-intuitive to me and a fascinating result. We predict that for essentially all realistic geologic carbon storage scenarios, diffusion will drive CO2 downwards. For underground hydrogen storage, the picture is more complicated; H2 will likely diffuse upwards but might reverse direction in deep or high-temperature gradient systems. Published in PRE, with Ruotong Huang and Adrian Sheppard: https://lnkd.in/gpDApcYy (an almost identical version is at arXiv: https://lnkd.in/gUGWpQCs)

People often ask us "Why is a GDF the best long-term solution?" Alternatives to geological disposal have been carefully researched and options are kept under review. At present, the alternatives to a GDF are: not technically achievable (for example: converting the waste to non-radioactive material), not environmentally safe (for example: disposal at sea or in ice sheets), or too dangerous to implement (for example: firing the waste into space on rockets). Deep geological disposal is recognised by scientists around the world as the safest long-term solution, when compared to the alternative options under review.

We are excited to announce our latest publication on Geophysical Research Letters! 📝 Chiara, Martina, Monica, and Alberto have just published a paper entitled “Stochastic Assessment of Dissolution at Fluid‐Mineral Interfaces“. The article illustrates #experimental protocols and #modeling approaches designed to evaluate and characterize absolute dissolution rates at the #nanoscale 🔬 https://lnkd.in/dgBDmgmn

Best invest in Building Fusion power, space, and maritime propulsion systems and industry, You talk about Nuclear (meaning Fission) and fail to discuss fusion. https://lnkd.in/ge_aeX7M The nuclear fission industry is, ignorant of what's happening around you. Pull your uranium heads out, start adjusting your industry to fusion energy and start preparing to enter the commercially growing fusion energy industry. As it dawns on Earth like the sun. Great Headline Guardian on Nuclear fission. https://lnkd.in/g8sMZtpR Fission is moving towards obsolescence at an accelerated pace, as it is "out of step, out of time, out of place," and merely a temporary industry globally. https://lnkd.in/gbd_mZqk Commercial fusion electrical generation is a promising innovative sustainable and clean energy method. By 2028, Helion is expected to start producing electricity from its first fusion commercial power plant, which will provide electricity to Microsoft. The plant will produce at least 50 MWe after an initial ramp-up period. https://lnkd.in/gY9J3MQY Now see what is happening in the Fusion industry in the world. https://lnkd.in/g9hMBD7a As fission trebles, fuel shortage is increasingly real, https://lnkd.in/gze5rwpr

Here is another interesting example comparing different land seismic acquisition. The buried geophones again have much less noise. The buried hydrophones have even further less noise! The shear wave plays an important role for land seismic noise even with vertical geophones. This has interesting implications...... I will discuss this and more in the upcoming free SEG Distinguished Lecture: https://lnkd.in/gZU5zkXz

The latest issue of Geomechanics and Tunneling, Vol 17(2), features our publication: "A Framework to Demonstrate the Utility and Safety of the Observational Method (OM)." In this paper, we introduce a probabilistic methodology to assess how the Observational Method impacts structural safety, specifically examining changes in the probability of failure when the OM is applied.
