In 1996 I was 11 year old. After school, I'd hop on two city buses and head home to an empty apartment. Well, not entirely empty—my faithful cat was there to greet me. My mom worked nights at a diner in Brooklyn, so she'd prepare dinner in the morning for me to warm up when I got home. By 3 PM, I'd be settled on the couch with a bowl of cereal, catching up on Gargoyles while starting my homework. Full House or The Fresh Prince kept me company at dinner time around 5 PM, and then it was off to wash dishes and prep my mom's coffee for the next morning. That routine lasted a good three years and it was lonely. It definitely wasn't the childhood I wanted for my daughter! I worked hard to ensure she had dinner with me every night, some sense of family, and most importantly, my presence. Fast forward to Covid, and suddenly I had the chance to reinvent our lives. Remote work seemed like the answer, but everyone said I lacked the experience. Then came those emails about becoming a VA—sounded too good to be true at first, but I took the leap and invested in the course. Learning new tools like Trello and Canva was eye-opening, and before I knew it, I landed my first client. She wanted help with her social media, and that's when I fell in love with social media marketing. Now, I help mompreneurs take that off their plates so they can focus on what matters most: prioritizing their motherhood. Social media marketing isn't just about posting—it's a full-time gig. I’ve got a lot of new followers (and my life has changed a lot in the past few years!) so I wanted to (re)introduce myself. 👋 I’m Amy. Start-up founder, recovering litigator, creator, wife and mom to 4 little girls. Career: I've mastered the pivot! I started out working on elections and anti-corruption with President Carter's The Carter Center. After attending the New York University School of Law, I spent 10 years practicing litigation with brilliant lawyers at Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP & Dorsey & Whitney LLP. Then in 2017, I started The Riveter. The first 3 years were a wild ride: I raised $30 million, grew to over 100 employees, & built out 10 coworking spaces across the country. Then the pandemic hit. Today we offer virtual workshops, content & community to help Riveters fearlessly step into their lived experience and share their expertise across the internet and IRL. I believe that expertise is the new professional currency - and that in amplifying our expertise, we can change the future of our work. (And in the middle of the pandemic, I stepped away from The Riveter to launch another brand (SaksWorks) for Hudson's Bay Company.) I am also working on my own content & expertise. Building on my Forbes column and iHeartMedia podcast, I’m telling my own story. My first book will hit shelves in 2025. I’m also the creator behind a viral TikTok channel telling the story of a wild legal saga my family has been fighting since 2020. (Google me. I don’t talk a lot about it here on LinkedIn, but it’s a story right out of a John Grisham novel.) Also, I love to speak to others about my work & I've spoken everywhere from Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity to Fortune Most Powerful Women. Family: 10 years ago, I married my husband Carleton N.. We have 4 amazing little girls - aged 9, 8, 6 and almost 5. Some fun facts: I’m a two-time state champion: Water polo! I went to space camp in 1988 & then worked at a wilderness camp in Northern Minnesota (1994-99) - where we had no showers. I’ve traveled to over 60 countries. I’ve lived in Columbus (18 years), Atlanta (4.5 years), New York City (8 years), Minneapolis (1 year), Seattle (8 years), and Honolulu (1 year). And now, back in Columbus again. I just read that we’re America’s fastest growing city. Last year, I started weight-lifting. I am now convinced it is the ticket to longevity. Re: my family's legal battle, I am now a fierce advocate for reform in the legal system. And a student of the science of resilience. I'm here if you need a friend to talk about either - because both can be lonely journeys. And now that I’m over 40, I'm diving deep into what life looks like for the coming decades. I am truly excited & always looking to learn about women doing remarkable things in their 50s, 60s and beyond. She believed she could change the world by staying home. Staying home to raise your kids is the most noble thing to do. I chose to do this because I wanted to be here for my kids. But it doesn't have to mean putting off your own dreams and goals. Staying home with my kids gave me the opportunity to do something online to build a strong future for us. It's been a wild couple of months, but I'm finally back in business! We enjoyed a beautiful family holiday in France; my youngest started school (and my eldest returned); and my beautiful little sister got married to a man that I am more than proud to call my brother-in-law. I am exhausted from a weekend of partying but weirdly excited to get stuck back into work (and I have more hours to dedicate to my clients now!) So. Is your messaging a bit wobbly? What a whirlwind journey I have been on this past year. There have been many challenges and moments of great elation. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that I would be the type of person to start her own business, but what truly constitutes a "business owner type." I am passionate, driven, and caring. I believe in the betterment of society through deliberate and purposeful action and planning. I am bold, tenacious, and brave enough to admit that I am scared, scared of the thrill and uncertainty of the unknown. Everyday, I grow with my business. I traverse through moments of both ambiguity and clarity. Though the path is not always clear, I am driven to serve my community. Upward Consulting champions that our communities deserve more, we deserve more. Let's move upward together through thoughtful program design and community collaboration as opposed to siloed attempts. We can obtain social change, if we put in the intentional work. I would like to thank everyone who has been on my journey thus far! Here’s the one thing that I absolutely hate about “supporting small business.” I’ve seen it happen time and time again. We know a small business owner and we instantly ask for a discount or what we can get for free. Are you kidding me? That’s so backwards right? When people start a family or start a marriage we shower them with gifts. When they take the leap and start a business then we want something for free. It’s odd. As we dive into the holiday shopping season, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush of big sales and massive discounts from large corporations. But this year, I want to encourage you to think about something different: supporting the small businesses that make our communities stronger. Take my good friend’s company, RB Enterprises USA LLC, for example. They specialize in top-of-the-line thermal and night vision optics from brands like AGM Global Vision, Pulsar, and Sionyx—products that can make a world of difference for outdoor enthusiasts, hunters, and law enforcement professionals alike. I’ve seen firsthand the passion, expertise, and hard work that goes into every product they market and sell. And while I know it’s tempting to look for discounts or freebies from friends and family, that mindset doesn’t help build or sustain the businesses we care about. When we support small businesses, we’re investing in more than just products. We’re investing in people, innovation, and local communities. Sometimes, it may cost a little more, but the value is far greater than what you can get from a giant retailer.
